99 Fuel Pump R&r W/walbro?

Fuel pump on my 99 Silverado is going out, it won't hold pressure after the engine is shut off, I suspect the check valve.

It looks like it'll cost me a ridiculous $300 or so to replace the entire fuel pump module, but it appears as though the fuel pump itself is a standard one installed into the module. Can I just replace the fuel pump itself with a Walbro 255lph universal? If so, what other hardware will I need? I can't seem to find a kit or parts list anywhere for the conversion, although I've seen several people have done it.

I keep reading that pulling the bed is much easier than dropping the tank, is there any clever way to pull the bed without help? I can probably get my wife to help me, but other than that, I don't have any male friends in the area.

Also, typically how long will a fuel pump last after the check valve has gone out? It seems to run okay, it just takes several seconds of cranking before it starts.

Can't answer the question about the fuel pump conversion but I did recently remove the bed on an 89 to do some fuel pump work and you're going to need more help than just your wife. Getting the bed ready to be removed is an easy job....the 89 had 8 bolts (long wheel base), 2 grounds, electrical connector for the tail lights and the bolts inside the fuel door. Took me about an hour and a half laying on my back on the ground and with regular hand tools. Took 4 of us to lift it off though.

I'm not sure if this will relate to your issue, but I had to change out everything on my '99 C2500. I had to drop the tank, because I have a utility bed on my truck, and this happened right after I filled it up with fuel. Good luck.
