Last week it came to light that an exploit (hacker program to make use of a flaw) for a known problem with the majority of ISP DNS servers had been released to the internet. There is now a tool available to check to see if the DNS servers used by your ISP have been patched to fix the flaw. Go to http://www.doxpara.com/ and press the 'Check My DNS' button.

 

What is a DNS server: Simply, a DNS server (Domain Name Server) is an application that maps the names of web sites to their unique IP addresses.

For example: www.gm-trucks.com maps to 208.100.23.65

 

Background: The flaw that existed/exists in DNS servers would allow a hacker to hack into a DNS server and change the mappings of names to IP addresses, possibly redirecting a user to a malicious clone website.

comcast fixed theirs almost immediately. Surprisingly I haven't had any customers call in about it.

For people that run their own DNS servers you need to be careful. Even the OpenDNS servers.

From the responses I got from some people on some of my other lists, there are a few ISP's out there that still haven't updated their DNS servers. Like AT&T in some areas.

 

Hopefully people who run their own DNS are smart enough to follow the news and update their servers with the patch.
