Ses Light, Crank Sensor

Hi,

I cannot get rid of this SES light for crank sensor. Just rebuilt engine (had same code before), replaced crank sensor, wires, plugs, had Gm set timing, had Crank relearn using Tech II tool, light still will not go away. I'm on my 3rd crank sensor. Any ideas?

Ok, here's a bit more detail. :

After completing engine install, installing PCM, truck would cut off after about 30 min. Changed Crank Position sensor and it solved that problem. Then had NO power and stumbled a bit. Timing was at of 37 degrees, adjusted it one tooth to 0, wouldn't run. Pulled front timing off, changed timing gears. It was ran fine & showed @ -7 degrees. SES light still on, not PO1345 but a code related to crank. Then had Crank relearn, set it timing to O. Now after another test drive timing is off 22 degrees.

I assume your asking for a 96 suburban with a 5.7? You didn't include what your working on in your post. Which crank code is it there are 4 that point in different directions.

Is the distributor tight?

Edit: I ask this because a while back one of the other guys in the shop was chasing a crank sensor code after doing an intake. The crank code was secondary to the distributor being one tooth off then loose once lined up. With the engine running and a tech-2 on it you should be able to watch base timing and it should be at or around 0 if you cannot get it there you are a tooth off or there is something physically wrong with the distributor. If once you achieve that 0 base timing and the distributor is not tight it will move and fool the pcm into thinking there is something wrong with the sensor.

That is the Crank shaft to Camshaft correlation code and is the same code we were chasing here. Under the diagnostics it states it's sole purpose is to check for a incorrectly installed distributor and that is the direction I would be heading if I were you. Perhaps it is installed correctly but there is something wrong with the shaft or teeth. I would take it out and have a look then make sure you line up correctly when reinstalling.

Thank you, will check it out. Wish me luck, I'm already $3000 in!

Good luck, I really think your going to find something in this area.

So, we pulled the timing chain...check

Pulled distributor, check cam sensor....check

Reset Distributor @TDC.....check

Long story short the cause of my head & wallet ache was......... a Knock sensor!

So, we pulled the timing chain

Oh Jesus what did you do that for? How did you come up with knock sensor problem? I think you fixed it on accident during your checking other things, if not can someone let me know how a knock sensor can set a P1345 (pennzoil)?

But glad you fixed it.
