Direct Injection

Ford is planing on using Turbo chargers and Super Chargers by 2010 in their V4's and V6's and possible even in V8's to gain better mileage. GM and Dodge will have to follow suit to compete if Ford does this. Looks like the horse power wars will not dissolve. TC and SC on a gas engine can really add lots of power! I would imagine not so far into the future the HD's will come with one of these DI's. Ford is planning on making the F100 again, they are making it a lighter duty pick up, lighter then the F150. They have to start with a new frame in order to do so because they say the current F150's frame is to heavy. I heard rumors of them possible dissolving the Ranger all together, but also heard possibly not. The F100 will come with a TC V4 or V6 and will be fuel efficient.

I don't think it's that far along until we'll see the HD trucks getting 20-22 mpg with one of these DI bolt on's. The 8.1 liter was sheveled because of it's appetite for gas, who knows maybe GM will find a way in the future to make tha engine get 15 plus MPG with a DI installed on it.

Some Diesel locomotive prime mover had both forms of Forced Induction, a supercharger and a turbocharger. It works.

A point of clarification. DI typically refers to Direct Injection. In a gasser this means the fuel injector is in the cylinder and injects fuel on the top of the piston and not in the intake port onto the intake valve. This gives about 10-15% better mpg and better emissions. In a diesel, it typically means the same, the fuel is not injected into a pre-chamber in the cylinder head as was the case with most early diesels in pickup trucks.

I hope that helps.

I made some typos, meant to talk about forced mainly. I was actually in a conversation this past weekend about direct injection and GM's possible move to it. I'll have to go back and do some editing.

GM is alreayd using DI in some 2009's. i.e. The Acadia's 3.5L V6 is now DI and will put out around 300HP and will get better MPGs than the current V6 does.

The engine you are referring to is a GM EMD, this is engine is a 2 stroke diesel. The supercharger on this engine (and the 2 cycle detroit diesel engines) is not considered "forced induction"

These engines have NO intake valves. They have an airbox incorporated into the block, and intake ports midway up the liner. The blower feeds the air to the cylinders, which fire on every compression stroke. The engines that are not turbo charged, are actually considered "naturally aspirated", as the blower is their only means of actually running.

I have built many EMDs, quite a beast, 645 and 710 cubic inches per cylinder.

???

I dont know about you but I've never heard of a turbo or supercharger getting better mileage.... more power... but that always comes at the cost of less mpgs.

Take a look at subaru.. between the awd and the turbo the wrx only gets 25 mpg's highway..... The awd 8 passenger acadia is rated at 24.............
