Just Bought A Motor....what Is It?

i just picked up a 5.3 out of a silverado from a 2002 model....how do i know its actually a 5.3 and not a 4.8? are there any visual diffrences???

Without taking it apart there are none to see. Look for casting numbers, check the block and heads. It would be simple to find out what engine it is if the truck you pulled it out of is around. If it is possible get the trucks VIN #. With that said the only difference between the 2 motors is the stroke.

I would think you could run the block number and find out. Is the block iron or aluminum?

its an iron block...im gonna run the casting number tommorrow

Post it in here and maybe one of the GM guys can tell you what it is.
