2008 Silverado Ext Cab Stereo Help!

I just bought the 08 silverado. I have the basic cd/radio not the bose. What can I do to improve the sound while still keeping the head unit stock. I have a kenwood powered dual 6.5 inch sub. will this make a difference? Do i need a complete speaker overhaul? Do I need an amp? What will I need for accessories to make sure wires don't become a mess.
