They Sure Make It Hard To Buy A Truck

Hi,

Don't get in here that much anymore, but wanted to share my experience at my local Chevy dealer. Now mind you, I bought my Sierra last September and it took me about an hour.

We decided that the price of the WT's was a good deal for both my son and daughter, so off we go to the dealer where they had two that we were interested in. Figured it's a good time to get the kids into good, safe, reliable vehilces, etc.

Both were base model standard cab 2WD, no bells and whistles. Sticker was $19,710, GMS was $15K, +/-. Got the dealer to give $2,000.00 trade on each of the kid's cars. So, after the discount, trade, and rebates, quick math tells us the price should be right around 11, out the door.

Dealer then tells us that they keep the rebates with the Family Pricing Deal they have going. I tell them that I'm not purchasing under that Program, that we have regular GMS numbers, etc., and that we expect the GMS price, less the rebate/trade, etc.

I took a loan, so I'm paying cash, for both vehicles. They just did NOT want to give up those rebates. And, it seemed like they didn't want to do anything but run it thru THIER financing system. I told them I didn't want to finance, I just want the right price, and I want to pay for the trucks, and leave, fat, dumb and happy!

Finally, it was my daughter who told the salesman that if he couldn't get his sh*t together, she'd go buy a F150. (I've since disowened daughter and changed our identities).

I looked that the paperwork, and I've never seen so much manuvering with numbers in my life. I'm an accountant and couldn't even be that creative.

WHY oh WHY is it so difficult to buy a couple of trucks, especially when they can't GIVE 'em away with the gas prices, etc.? One would think that the salesman would be drooling over the sale. I don't expect something for nothing, but just want a fair deal.

Thanks for letting me rant!

Things like this are easy. Go to another dealer.

Really, I had the same thing in the spring with the rebates. They tried the old "we can't sell below invoice, even with rebates, we could not make money"

My good old hometown dealer.......

BS, I went to another dealer, and got my truck for 9000 under sticker. (good for back then, rebates were not as high)

That dealer way trying to f**k you coming and going. Just go to another dealer that isn't a sleeze, and you will get GMS + rebates just like you should. they might ask you to give them a chance to finance them as well, but if you come in with cash in hand, they probably won't even bother with that.

to be clear. the dealer you're currently working with is a thief, pure and simple. get the trucks else where with a GOOD dealer and then stop at the thief's shop to show them your nice new trucks.

Let folks here know whish dealer it was that tried to hose you like that as well.

You should report the dealer to GM. There are rules for both the buyer and seller and that dealership isn't following the rules. Make sure they didn't charge you more than $75 in document fees and such.

It stinks that some dealers have to operate that way. They do try to get you coming AND going!! But only if you let them. I went to a dealer and he wanted to give me "auctions" prices for my trade and tell me he couldn't do much better than MSRP for the new vehicle. I gave him the old "I was born at night, but not last night". Needless to say I took my business somewhere else where the dealer was reasonable....they got my business because they worked with me to make the deal.

Mine added $s to the GMS price, I questioned them and produced the GMS price from the GMC website and they tried to convince me that the invoice price had changed and that the GMS price I had was outdated. When I told them I would call GM to verify they instantly agreed to proceed with the GMS price I had.

Agreed. I went to MY dealer today, and told my salesman what happend, and he chastised me for not coming to him first, and I deserved it. I mean, he really let me have it. And I deserved it.

After that, it was right down to business. He's gonna look on the locator and find us what we need. I'll tell ya - there's nothing like gonig to a dealer who tells you right up front what the deal is, and doesn't mess around, or screw with numbers or anything, ESPECIALLY when they're not going to make a big profit. I mean, this is a dealer who washes your truck, wipes down the inside, AND does the inside glass, all while you're there for an oil change!

I told them what I wanted, how much money I had, that I wanted extended warranties to 100K miles (remember, youngin's will be driving these), and that I needed at least $2500 on each trade. If I can't walk outta there for less than $30K, something's wrong...

Now - I just gotta figure out how I'm gonna collect a car payment every month from these two kids...

Pretty nice dad you are...I got a hand me down plymouth Sundance rust bucket with a bazillion miles to drive to college. I thought it was awesome I only had to pay for the title transfer!

that's easy. the trucks stay at home unless payment is made.

...says the guy that can't even get his four year old to clean her playroom

My old man bought me an old Plymouth Duster to drive back and forth to college. What he DIDN'T know, what that it had the famed 340 under the hood... But that's another story. My son has a good job and can afford it, and my daughter, well, she's a college princess. Both can afford a payment, but neither could get an auto loan for under 15%, and nor would I cosign for either. I was able to get a loan from my retirement fund at a rate that was next to nothing. Since there's no leinholder, The Bank Of Dad holds the note. And I'll reposess those trucks quicker than a snake on a rat.

The wife and I just want both the kids to have decent vehicles, instead of 10 year old cars that need nothing but service service service. We got what we wanted at the dealer - just under $30K for the two trucks. I was actually pretty surprised as far as car insurance goes too. It really didn't go up that awful much.

Now each kid owes me $260 a month, for the rest of their lives...

I tell ya what, my 1999 standard cab, short box 2WD Chevy truck was great while in college. It was reliable, drove like a dream, and I could move myself to and from apartments and dorm rooms in one trip. Plus, I never had to drive when it was time for all 4 roommates to go anywhere

Good luck with your purchases. Having a good car dealer is very important. It ranks right there with a good lawyer and accountant.

I had to buy my own car when I was 17 with my saved paper route money. Now my old man gives my oldest son who is 16 his old car. A mint 1995 Grand Am with only 60K miles on it. At least I didn't have to buy him one but I am stuck with paying the higher insurance premium when he gets his license next week.
