Intermediate Steering Shaft Knock?

I have the clunking noise which I can hear and feel in my steering wheel, it is slowly getting more noticeable. By looking at the repair history from my VIN I don't believe it has been done before while on warranty. Is this something that GM will still cover after the vehicle is off warranty because of all of the trouble they have had with it or am I out of luck on getting it repaired for free? I have about 97,000 km on my truck at this time.

I also heard there is some kind of repair kit (grease) that you can purchase to repair this noise but you never know how long it will last. My GM Mechanic friend states they use it sometimes instead of changing the shaft. Anyone have the part number for this?

I had mine done at 72K miles - thumping & knocking was loud. Part number was 19153614 - mine wasn't under warranty, cost around $250. Took care of the problem for now, we'll see how long it lasts.

I just changed my Intermediate Shaft (GM P/N 19153614) this past weekend for a similar problem in my 2003 Silverado. From what I've read recently lubrication of the shaft does'nt always work and if it does, the problem returns. This part is supposed to be the permanent fix. Steering is like new now. Easy to replace and only cost $52.44 from GM Parts Direct.com. Instructions for this repair can also be found on this website. Good Luck.
