Spare Tire Issue

I'm not sure if any one has ever had this issue, but I went to take down my spare tire the other day and when lowering the cable, the tire would just STOP and the cable would continue to unravel. I figured it may have been stuck and gave it a few "nudges" to say the least. I started reading the manual in the glove box and it was talking about some silly secondary latch system that you needed to use the jack from the truck and put it on top of the chock blocks and jack the center of the tire up to unlatch... Has anyone EVER had to deal with this? I ended up using a freakin wiz wheel to cut it down and got rid of that stupid azz secondary latch system... I just didn't know if my truck was one of a million that has had this issue...

Are you telling me that the tire now only comes down part way, then you have to use the jack to lift up the tire and take it down? If that's the case, we're really getting shafted on paying for 'extra features' we REALLY don't need. I'll take my old crank it til it hits the ground thing, thanks.

that's exactly what I'm saying.... I used the cutoff wheel to eliminate the "secondary latch" system. I couldn't imagine being caught on the side of the road with a flat and have to go through with that...

I don't know why the manual is written that way. The objective is to get the tire tight up there to disengage the secondary latch. I have always been able to do that by cranking up on the tire with the cable. So try turning it clockwise till you hear the click then go counter clockwise to lower. It's probably written that way because if you have an old weak cable you could snap it doing it my way but if that happened then you'd just jack up on the tire and once the latch let loose the tire would fall.

I tried that as well.... I went up with it, had it click a few times, then tried lowering it... no luck. I didn't want to have to do it but it works fine now just with the crank.... But I do agree about the manual.. It is written a little bit confusing.
