Help! Two Way Remote Question

I'm currently at a Chevy dealer in the waiting room and they just informed me that since my 08 Silverado has a rear window defogger it can't be installed?

 

Specs:

08 Silverado Ext. Cab Short bed

Already has remote start

LT1 package

doesn't have rear sliding glass but does have the defogger...

 

Are they right in telling me that it can't be installed? I was under the impression that since I dont have the rear sliding glass there was no issue.

I can't speak for the defogger but I have the Sliding Rear window and my dealer installed the Advanced Two Way Remote with no problems. The tech said he would have to move the antenna to one side which would likely reduce the range. Kind of contradicts with the "official" story but it works great!

Thanks!! The service manager just came in to apologize and say that they can get it installed but they will have to remove the rear seats... He said he estimates another 2 hours of waiting. :thumbs:

one other quick question. Where is the antenna supposed to be installed? The service manager just said that they were going to install it behind the second row driver's side headrest. Is that right? I would have thought it should be placed at the top of the window in the middle.

 

Sorry for all the questions. All of the sudden I have no faith in the techs here because they have never installed one before and seem to be flying by the seat of their pants.

Last week I had a two way remote / extended range kit put on my 08 SD at a custom accessories shop. When I arranged to have this done (along with some other things), I was under the impression that they were going to install the GM kit. Much to my dismay when I picked the truck up, the key fob looked different that what is shown on the GM accessories sight and when I asked them where they mounted the antenna, they pointed at the windshield. It is mounted on the windshield, behind the mirror just like the majority of non-GM remote start antennas.

 

I was worried that this accessory store sold me a POS, but I have been quite impressed with the system they installed. I have been able to start the truck up to two blocks away on completely different streets without line of sight. I’ve also been able to start the truck from inside buildings, which was a problem for my last Viper two way system. I’ve only had it a week and still need to experiment with it, but so far, I’m pretty happy. The big plus with this particular kit is the fob itself. It’s physically smaller than the GM fob that came with the truck.

 

I figured I’d put this information out there because I don’t think there are very many who know that there is an aftermarket solution for extending the OEM remote starts. This was the first extension kit that this particular shop has installed and it took them about three hours to install (which included time to figure out how to do it).

 

The brand is somewhat confusing to me. At the top of the user manual (which is actually a one page document) Auto Mate, “AM14 Data start system for GM with LCD 2way remote” is noted, but the name Directed Electronics on the bottom. I’m assuming Directed Electronics is the parent company. The part number is: P/N 4301A. The shop charged me $300 for the kit, installed.

Directed Electronics pretty much has a monopoly on the auto security market as they own most of the major brands (Clifford, Python, Viper, Automate, Autostart, etc, etc, etc). They also make components for other alarm companies like Ungo.

Alright. One last question about this new Advanced Remote. I've searched around and found that most people have a range of about 500'. The one my dealer installed yesterday has a range of about 30'. What do you guys think the problem is? The dealer had no idea how to install it and I'm assuming the antenna is in the wrong place. They put it right behind the second row headrest on the drivers side. Any ideas?

I need to look up the model that you purchased and I don't have time right now to do that but my experience with the Clifford/DEI 2-way remotes on the GMT-900 was that the top-of-line 70.5X had terrible range on my truck (antenna on dash just in front of the light sensor), so I dropped down one model to the 50.5X which uses Spread Spectrum (SST)...now my range is more then 500' if I'm standing outside and about 300' from inside my office building (typical warehouse, tilt-wall, lots of metal in the roof and walls, lots of "containers" (semi trailers) between me and the truck). You might check to see if your model has SST and if not see if there is a comparable model in that brand with SST and swap to that one.

 

Moving the antenna might help but it's not going to change 30' into 500'.

I found very little info online about the AM14 which makes sense since this product is not marketed directly to end-users. I think the AM14 is just the basic 2-way system that is packaged with the necessary XpressKit modules to make the install easier. It also appears that Automate doesn't offer an SST remote but, if my assumptions about the XpressKit module is correct you could easily have this swapped out for a Viper, Clifford, or Python 2-way system with SST...the cost difference should be minimal but you might have to get your money back on the Automate and go to an authorized Clifford/Viper/Python dealer to get what you really want OR you could attempt to get the OE system (if it will work on your truck).

      2026 6.6 L5P oil cooler leaking oil at 4,000 miles

      New to diesel trucks. I happened to find my oil cooler leaking oil externally with only 4,000 miles on the truck. I didn’t realize this was an issue until I started researching it. Dealer is going to replace it under warranty but I’m wondering if there’s anything GM is working on to fix this issue. I’ve heard the oil filter used is the same as they use on their V6 motors and that’s what is causing the problems. Should I switch to a bigger filter or keep using the OEM recommended?

      Seems to be Missing a lot of Updates

      So, GMCustomerService:  Judging by the Update History pictured above, is this truck missing any updates that it actually needs. If it's just for the infotainment system, the radio is working fine and no trouble with SeriusXM. and Android Auto is working fine wirelessly with my phone. Some months ago, an update notice was sent to my truck. I approved the update and it finished saying that the update was successful, but it seems that whatever that update was, it didn't actually get installed - at least not if I'm to go by the Update History shown above.   So, again, are there any updates that this truck really should have? I've checked with my dealer but they're reluctant or commit to anything and if I want them to check, they require a $200.00 fee just to check it out and then I'd have to pay for the actual update(s).    Ignorance is bliss, and if none of the updates goes to fixing any mechanical discrepancies, I'll just leave things as is.

      Hey everyone, I recently had an issue with my 07 2500HD GMT900. My DRL’s stay on at all times. Right front turn and right mirror turn signal indicator stay on solid at all times. By “at all times” I mean the only way to make them go off is disconnecting the battery. I tore the headlight assemblies out, tried disconnecting the harnesses to eliminate bad wiring at the harness, I unplugged the headlight switch, no change and the mirror turn signal still stayed on. My first thoughts were : Bad bulb and/or socket somewhere, under hood fuse panel bad, bcm bad, tail light or trailer wiring problem, or some random short to power in the harness.  Possibly a bad ground but unlikely. I had a big clue in the fuse panel, it had a burnt smell. I started pulling every fuse that had to do with DRL or right turn/park lamp. Nothing made the right directional turn off but pulling the DRL2 fuse made the DRL’s go out.  After studying wiring diagrams, I found that both problems had that fuse panel in common, the bcm also controls both problems but knowing the fuse panel had a burnt smell I removed and disassembled the fuse panel and found a little corrosion on the printed circuit board.  I ordered a new fuse panel from Amazon for like $260. When it arrived I installed it, and put everything back together, the problem was fixed. I figured the fuse panel needed to be replaced anyway so that was a logical place to start. Hopefully this story helps someone in the future. Regretfully I didn’t scan for codes before I did everything.

      That stinks. I’m sitting on the side of the road right now with the same issue. Never had an issue before taking it in for the ground strap recall. Now I’m outside of warranty and they’ll probably want $200 just to diagnose what they already “fixed”.
