Improve Your Cup Holder

I have a continuing problem with the cup holders in the console of my Z71 '01 Chevy. If I put a bottle of water in the holder and turn a corner the bottle trips over and sometimes falls on the floor. I have taken out the rubber fingers and turned them over with no gain. Then it hit me to make a cup holder that is taller.

By taking out the front cup holder assembly I started by measuring the diameter of each holder. The top measured 3.5". The holder is tapered slightly so I knew that I would have to taper my new improved cup holder. I purchased 1 foot of ABS pipe in 3" with an OD of 3.5". To make the taper I made a series of saw cuts(4 passes to make 8 cuts) in one end with my table saw. This allowed the pipe to squeeze together to fit the taper. Next I cut the length 2" above the top of the original cup holder. Using some coarse sand paper and a belt sander I sanded the upper and lower edges to relieve the sharp edges. I used some Goof Off to remove the printing ink from the pipe. Finally I pushed the pipe into the cup holder with the rubber fingers still in place. Very nice tight fit and the bottles and cans can't tip anymore!

My cup holders are for the center console. But if your holders are 3.5" it will work. If a different size go to the local hardware store and measure various pipes and get one that's right.
