Another Nbs Truck - Oil Change Question

Recommended Posts

Posted

Today I changed Oil, 1st time my self, so I check the deepstick yea it was low I add more -now its good, ok I start the engine run for a while then stop.

check the oil, again it was showing low, then I add about half a quart..shoot, I pour little more oil than its needed, now oil level reading is 2/8th of an inch above max line on the deepstick.

my question is should I leave that extra oil in there or do I have to take them out?

If I don't will it kill my engine or something? - tonight I don't think I can sleep without that whiskey bottle..

stupid me

any input...I thanks in Advance

How much oil (total) did you put in your truck? If you used the recommended 6 quarts then it might go down a bit. But if you used more than that then I’d bit the bullet and drain some oil.

I change the oil on my truck about two weeks ago. I added 6 quarts and it showed above the line when I first checked it but later it was fine. But I only used 6 quarts (a little less actually because a buddy of mine kicked an open quart and spilled ¼ oil on the floor).

When you check the oil are you waiting 1/2 hour with vehicle on level ground? If not you are getting a bad reading.

no I didn't wait 1/2 hour, may be around 5 min..

how much oil did I put? I got my oil from Canadian Tire Castrol 5w-50 1 jug 4.4L + 2 more quarts, so I pour the whole jug 4.4L+1quart+ another 3/4 quart. according to that math I think i put 6.2L...

I think I am ok to run as it is...I really don't want to open the drain plug again...but If I must then I will.

now its little dark and late here, I will check the oil level tomorrow mornning..let see.

Thanks guys for the quick reply.!

Check it in the morning before you start it. If it isn't more than 1/4 inch high, I don't think you have a problem running it like that. If it's much higher, I'd consider removing some.

Just my opinion.

I think you will be fine. If you have ever had the bottom end apart on these LSX based engines you will see how much oil it would take before any aeration or windage of the oil could take place by the crank. GM told us on the LS1 that if you roadrace and experience high G's to add an extra quart when racing to keep from starving the pump under hard turns.

Dipstick? What is that? Hell, I just fill mine until it's full and starts coming out of the filler neck.

:D

Ooh shit Dipstick, yea thats what I meant haha..ah

coming out of the filler neck...you are kidding right ?

Hey Vmax, I am pretty sure you know this...what will happen if I put too much oil in to the engine..

If you immediately do not remove that extra 1/2 pint of oil from your crankcase, the truck will spontaneously combust in less than 24 hours.

Seriously though, nothing to worry about. Even extra 1 quart of oil in the crankcase would not be enough to worry about. If you dumped three or more extra quarts in there, then there would be some concern over oil foaming.

According to the owner's manual, the V8 motors should take 6 quarts (5.7L) of oil for a normal fill. V-6 motors take 4.5 quarts.

Why on earth are you using a 5W-50 oil?? The manual says 5W-30 for nearly all climate/ temerature ranges. Only when the temps get below -20 degrees F (-29 degrees C) then you can go with a 5W-30 full synthetic or 0W-30 dino.
