2007 Silverado Drum Brakes

hey, i was curious if it was possible to get all the necessary parts from a 2007 silverado that has rear disc brakes and would they bolt up to my existing set up to replace the rear drums?

would it effect anything due to the proportioning valve set up for drum brakes?

The easiest way would be to simply get an entire rear axle including the brakes and replace the existing one. You could probably get all the individual parts but it could be expensive. Calipers, rotors, pads, mounting brackets, parking brake components, and new brake hoses would be needed.

 

There would have to be a change to the proportioning valve/spring in the master cylinder and you may even have to swap the existing master for a disc brake specific unit. If you have the dynamic proportional braking system, there may have to be changes to the BCM. The ABS pump may also be affected due to brake pressure and even the amount of fluid used in the operation of the disc caliper.

The real question is why?

 

The GMT900 trucks with drum brakes stop quicker and with better modulation than the GMT800s did with discs. Simply adding OEM disc brakes isn't going to necessarily improve anything. If you intended to go with a high performance upgrade, it might be a different story.

TSM from Hotrod Manufacturing makes a disc break conversion kits I would like to think that if you were seriously considering disc brakes that you could get something more on the performance side with bigger rotors..

 

I put a disc brake conversion kit on my 99 Chevy truck... I put a 3/4 ton rear end to but they had a brake conversion kit for my 10 bolt!

When GM first came out with the 1500 crew cab in 2004, it still had rear disc brakes. They were absolutely awful. I test drove a new 2004 crew cab Z71 and did not buy it because of weak brakes. My 2006 with rear drum brakes has much more responsive brakes and less pedal pressure is required to stop the truck. They probably increased the diameter of the front rotors too, but it is quite an improvement over the 2004 model.

 

I must admit however, the rear drum brakes ABS system is not as efficient as all disc brake ABS system due to slower response of the drum brakes to pressure modulation.

True, they did beef up the front brakes when they went back to drums. I don't doubt that your brakes in your 2006 are better than your 2004, but if you think it's due to the drum brakes, you are only fooling yourself.

 

The 4 wheel disc brakes in my 2007 are 100x better then the 4 wheel disc brakes in my 2000.

I call BS on the blanket statement that discs are always better than drums.

 

Rear brakes are more "helper" brakes than anything. The vast majority of the braking system is biased toward the front brakes. Back in our SCCA racer days, we ran as much as 80% front bias on the GT cars. Any more and the rears would lock on corner entry. I know most people don't drive like that on the street, but I'd bet that you could drive normally using only front brakes and many people would not be able to ever tell the difference on dry land. Good rear brakes (drum or disc) can perform equally as well... they only have about 30% of the brake force to deal with.

Yes, that is why rear discs/calipers are smaller than the fronts. :thumbs:

 

While everything you said is true, the fact still remains that discs are superior to drums in braking ability.

 

Hell, even little 2000 lb cars have all gone to 4 wheel disc breaks today. Why is that?

    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
