hi i am new memberand i have question that someone could answer. i have 2004 chevy silverado hd 4x4 with 60k miles. i was just informed by my mechanic that the transfer case is gone. it sounds like this a common problem with these trucks. iwas wondering if i could get advise what to do next. thanks

Your obviously going to have to replace it. Doing so is pretty much a remove and replace affair. If you dont need the 4WD and its not effecting drive-ability you could just leave it in 2WD as well.

I have never heard of transfer case just failing. It is usually the result of abuse, misuse or poor maintenace. Finding the cause is just as important as fixing it. Good luck.

it is more expensive yet far easier to R&R the case, plus then you have warranty, but the usuall problem in the case is just a stretched chain, which can`t remember for sure is around 300 bucks, plus maybe 50 in gasket and seals, this is more advanced and time consuming but with a manual i recommend, did your mechanic tell you exactly what has failed? if he beleives its more than just a stretched chain price out a remand case and weight your options

Could be he had the famous "transfer case rub" and lost all his

fluid ran the case dry and smoked it!

Most likely and when that happens most of the time you can not fix it.

no did not loose fluid. mechanic said the bearing is bad. this vibration occurs at 2500 rpm on the highway at about 65-70 mph. does not vibrate when going through the gears.

if you have your mechanic remove it and repair it, its not much more to get a reman case, and you can easily swap that out

I hope that failure of the transfer case at that low a mileage is not a common problem! My '04 only has 34000, so I hope to have many more trouble free miles. Of course I see a lot of these GMCs on the road, so I assume the transfer case failure is not a common problem. Another note, where I work we have a '00 3500 dump, 6.0 auto 4X4. We haul a lot with it and plow. Only 25000, but over 4500 hours on it, transfer case still working.
