no seriously, your service department at the dealership should be able to provide a printout of the vehicle in question. as to whether they charge for that or not, that is up to them.

I must have missed something. Does GM forbid their employees or others for that matter from disclosing VIN information? If so, why? :D

I authored the reason why:

I realize this topic played out in the mentioned thread but it makes absolutely no sense to me why VIN checks are prohibited. They are used for nothing more than identification and don't disclose anything proprietary to the company. What harm can it cause GM or its dealers if someone looking at a particular used or new vehicle to purchase wanting to find out how it is built?

simple, this is a public domain where anyone could request it anonymously and we would post it here. All the information that is accessible through GM Global Connect has to be done with a user id and password. This is the terms for accessing and using GM Global Connect:

We never got permission to post this data on GM-Trucks.com, therefore GM has every right to sue the individual parties, requestors, and GM-Trucks.com. I personally do not wish to be persecuted by GM nor do I wish to have the site shut down because of our actions...I believe alot of other guys share the same sentiment as I.

M. Cueva - You missed the point of my question. I understand that GM has the right to control copyrighted material but WHY would they object to the dissemination of VIN decoding? It does not take anything away from their business. In other words, no one profits from the exercise here at the expense of GM. As for the ordinary use of trademark names e.g. GM, GMC, Sierra, etc. as commonly used in discussion, NONSENSE! These are in the public domain and no one needs permission from GM for ordinary use. This forum may elect to restrict their use but they do it solely as a matter of policy.

Long Answer:

Point was not missed, that was the reason that I was given when I contacted GM regarding this very issue. The RPO codes can be considered confidential information as well as some of the descriptive items such as plant location for components as well as warranty repairs. This is their point, they do not care if GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Silverado Cadillac Escalade or any other name is put out there. the little things such as the model type: CC1305 (an example model number). GM wants the dealerships to give this information out, which usually means someone going in person, not asking for it over fax, email, forum or any other method. GM wants dealers to control the information. I did not work for any dealership, rather I worked for the corp directly and GM would not allow us to 'release' any information to the customer, they would make us 'release' it through the dealership.

For GM, it is not about profit (actually it is becoming that but that is another discussion) for VIN build sheets but it is a clear violation of the policies and practices of the companies. The original complaint was for logos, confidential information and the such, but further inspection reveals that some of the information we were posting did inherently include 'profitable' information. I do know that all of the build sheets that I have posted did not include profitable information, just confidential information. It is a lost cause because the lawyers do frequent the site now they know we are here.

Short Answer: THEY HAVE LOST TOUCH WITH THE PUBLIC AND DONT GIVE A DAMN
