Intermittent Power Door Locks And Windows

On my 89 Sierra k1500, the power door locks and windows won't work "most" of the time when I try with the doors open. With them closed, they operate normally, every time.

I had read on this or another forum that this situation could be caused by a faulty ignition switch. I changed that out, along with the ignition key cylinder, but the problem still exists.

Any ideas on the remedy before I remove the door panels?

Do you have interior lights and do they function all the time when the doors open? I would check for any broken wireing in the loom that extends into the door. Also check any door jamb plunger devices for good contact/ground. In all honesty, I would pull the door panel and see what's inside. Does this happen on both doors or just one side. If the passenger side, can the driver side still control with the pass door open?

Interior lights on as they should be, with either door open.

I've manually operated the jamb plungers and they operate correctly. I haven't checked their ground, though.

The irregularities occur with both doors., if they are open. I haven't tried w/ the driver door closed and the passenger open. I'll do that.

I'll open the door panel up, too, probably.

WEIRD WEIRD WEIRD

After putting my door lock switch through its paces, this is what I get.

With either door, they operate only when the door is closed or open only partially. By that, I mean once the door passes the first indention on the steel plate that controls door position, they stop working. Also, the locking switch that moves up and down operates normally on the passenger side, with either door switch. However, the driver side lock doesn't slide all the way up when activated by the driver side switch. WEIRD

 

I'll be pulling the door panels in the next week or so. Maybe I can detect the problem, but from what I am seeing, nothing makes sense. It seems the wires, if shorting out, would be a little less uniform in their failure. The fact that both doors fail when the door is a specific distance open seems designed.

I've got a '91 Silverado w/ very similar design door panels. I'm gonna guess the wiring harness is the same or close to it. My door switches work w/ every door position permutation you can come up with in that truck. I first thought it was the switches themselves in my sierra and was the reason I planned to trade out the door panels on the two trucks, including the switches. I still plan to do that but I'd like to find the gremlin!
