Headlight Armor? Need Opinions

Recommended Posts

I am looking to smoke out my head and tail lights. What do you guys think on this product? It looks pretty cool to me. I don't need to worry about painting my headlights or opening them up to paint them, etc. Basically its like 3M clear bras but thick and with dark tint. Check it out...I am looking for some opinions.

By the way I am interested in the stealth smoke color. My entire front end is blacked out with billet inserts, so I figure it would look the best that way.

That website says something about painting the inside of the lens of your taillgiht? lolololololololol not true.

Go to your local body shop that you trust, tell them what you want, even a picture of approximate shade would help, and have them smoke em'.

My local body shop does a lot and this is what they do. Scotch pad the taillights/headlight to rough em up, then mix black and clear coat together and start sprayin till you get the darkness ya like. Its super clean looking and you can wax it like the rest of your truck since it is cleared and because of that they blend really nice with the vehicle, seen it done MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANY times, trust me its worth the money if they do it right.

EDIT: The reason i suggest this over covers or overlays is because i have heard so many stories about those coming off at highway speeds, something i'm sure you don't want lol.

Thanks for the comments, however, you didn't read the website properly. It does not say that any where. This is a clear film, just like 3M clear bra's, which I already have on the front of my truck they are sick. However, it's a little thicker and has tint in it. So its a nice alternative to painting my lights. If I get sick of it then I just peel the crap off.

I understand that painting looks nice too, but I am looking for an alternative, especially with the headlights.

Lol, I know what they are selling and what your inquiring about, and i def understand you wanting to be able to remove them. But in the first line it says its a better alternative than painting the inside of the lenses and i was just laughing at that because that seems like a ridiculous way to do it.

Sorry for the confusion :pimp:

LOL...my bad...I'm a little slow sometimes.

I hear you, I think it would look sick to split open my stock headlights and paint the chrome pieces black, but I don't like the idea of siliconing them back together. Sooner or later you are going to get mositure in there…I don't care what anyone says. I guess I will have to think about it over the weekend. I have a good friend that is a lead painter at a quality body shop. So clearing the taillights would be a piece of cake. Maybe I should just do that....this headlight armor crap just seems so easy.

I would definitely suggest the overlays for the headlights, not sure how strict they are where you live but here in Texas (or at least the part i live in) they'll give you a fix-it ticket so fast your head will spin, and having something quickly removable would be nice. As for the taillights you should be fine with getting them actually painted, a bonus to that is it is removable just like the overlays, only it requires a little more effort. You would just sand off the paint and clear coat back to the factory taillight, and JUST clear over it. I had some chrome aftermarket taillights on my last truck and one got cracked, they just sanded it and clear coated it and it looked good as new!

I would keep researching too. That's just one experience, but it sure would be a shame to put them on your truck then have them crack the headlights, especially since they probably cost, just my guess, like $250ish bucks a pop!

I just found this post. I am a little skeptical now, but still like there stuff. I am going to keep researching it first.

Check out the link.

I have 3-M Clear Bra on the front of my Cadillac DTS.

I also have the EXTRA THICK, CLEAR protective covers on the headlights.

I have not had any problems with them ...YET. :pimp:

They have been on there about two years.

But remember that they are CLEAR... not BLACK, and they are made by 3-M.

I would check and see if 3-M makes the black ones.

I would feel much more comfortable with 3-M brand.

If you are willing to fork out the money, it is definitely worth it because it'll last forever as long as it's done right.

Looks like the same thing as Lamin-X film. I have used Lamin-X yellow film for my fogs. Really liked the product, but wasn't a fan of the color, so I ended up taking it off. I think this might be what you would be looking for: 07+ Smoke Tail Just my $0.02
