My 05 Sierra popped a CEL and told me to tighten fuel cap. I got the message 3 times and havent gotten it since. Ive removed and tightend the cap and at first it went out but the next morning when it was cold I got the msg again. Is there something that I can do other then replacing it. If I do have to replace it is it covered under the GM Major gaurd warentee??

could be a ground wire right next to the filler..

my friends truck had a broken ground wire right there and threw a code..

On cold days, the filler neck parts shrink and can cause minor air leaks. These can set of the CEL for the same reason a loose cap can.

SO this is going to be a regular thing? or is there a fix? Ive got the GM major gaurd warentee so if its something that can be fixed I'll make them fix it. I hate haveing a CEL on. It went off the first time but when it came back on it hasnt gone away again.

It is probably the little gasket ... where the gas cap seals to the end of the filler neck.

There should be a list of NON COVERED parts in your GMPP warranty booklet.

The gas cap is probably covered under the 80,000 mile EMISSIONS warranty.

Call the dealer to see if it is covered either way... if not... a gas cap doesn't cost much.
