It's ironic, an hour or so after I posted my reply, I heard a GM ad on the radio. They were saying how great Onstar was because it reminded you to do all your maintenance.

 

I'm not an Onstar type of guy, but I suppose it may be useful for some folks?

Introducing Stolen Vehicle Slowdown

 

Available on select 2009 GM vehicles, OnStar can work with authorities to remotely slow down a stolen vehicle, helping to reduce fatalities and damage.

 

Stolen Vehicle Slowdown is the newest enhancement to the Stolen Vehicle Assistance service and will debut on select 2009 model year GM vehicles. Only OnStar provides Stolen Vehicle Slowdown, which can help reduce the number of fatalities, injuries and property damage due to high-speed pursuits of stolen vehicles.

 

 

1)Subscriber reports stolen vehicle to authorities and requests Stolen Vehicle Assistance from OnStar

 

 

2)OnStar pinpoints the vehicle’s exact location with real-time GPS and provides it to authorities

 

 

3)Police establish a clear line of sight of the stolen vehicle and request that OnStar slow it down

 

 

4)OnStar sends a remote signal to slow the vehicle down gradually

I wasn't an OnStar guy, until slamming on the breaks several times to avoid critters on desolate roads in the Dakotas and Montana with wife and child. I got it for them. The phone is also nice for those areas with no cell phone reception. I've only found 1 area where OnStar doesn't get signal.

That might be the case in your area but the cell phone function of OnStar just uses a regular cell network and as such, is subject to most of the same issues other cell phone networks. If I went into the mountains my OnStar was just as dead as my cell phone. I did find that OnStar had better connection performance over the cell phone but that was just the difference of a roof-mounted antenna. Once you get out of the vehicle, your cell phone's range is on par with the Onstar.

 

My whole issue with Stolen vehicle recovery and the new feature of being able to shut the engine down is that real-life isn't an episode of CSI. Most police agencies couldn't give a rat's ass that your Escalade just got pinched. You'll get a claim number and a word of sympathy and likely not much else. No, they're not going to drop everything and start tracking your vehicle. And the biggest kicker - you cannot track it yourself. OnStar will just tell you that a police agency is the only one they will release that info for. That's one of the reasons why I cancelled mine after the complementary year. Anyway, with the "smart" key's we have, crackheads can't punch the ignition and disappear with your ride so it's not much of an issue.

In the mountains is where I've been without service. OnStar phone is 3 watts, average cell phone is about 0.5 watts. I've had OnStar service lots of places where the cell phone is dead.
