Sleeves Over Plugs

I have a 2001 4.8 chevy Silverado. This is the first time I'm changing the plugs and there are these metal sleeves over the plugs that won't pull off by hand. How do I get them off? Thanks for the help!

They do pull off, just takes some good pulling. Once you have the rubber boot, twist the boot till it turns on the plug first before pulling it off. Good luck!

Plug wires/metal sleeves are a bitch on these engines if they aren't played with biannually. I've ripped plug wires off the boots during spark plug changes. I've also had some plug wire/boot internals stick on the plug after ripping the plug wire off the plug. I now have a spare set of plug wires chilling out out awaiting the next spark plug change.

You can change spark plugs? :gmc:

lol, vice grips make it easier but the metal sleeves get ate up pretty badly.

When the cats were toast and I was suspecting the spark plugs being fouled, I got changing spark plugs down to a science. I must have taken them all out and put them back in 3 times, including installing the new ones lol.

Odd, those metal sleeves where the least of my problems when I changed the plugs on my old 02 Sierra a while back. The wires that attached to the actual plugs were a pain to get off. Luckily I ordered a set of Taylor wires so I didn’t care if I ripped the plugs off.

The metal sleeves just slide off, with no problems.

Remember to use anti seize on the plug threads and a dab on the inside of the boot.
