New Tsb Posted On Radios On Dec 16

MY 2007 NBS has had a battery issue for over a year and the dealer can not figure out the problem. The truck will kill the battery for no obvious reason and at no set frequency. I have had the truck in to them multiple times and they have changed parts ranging from door locks, fuel pump relays, and a host of other do-hickies.

Yesterday the truck would not start again after work. This time I was told that a TSB was posted on Dec, 16 about the radios. They took the ser# off of my radio and said they would be in touch. Can any one get me a copy of that so I can read it for my self?

I am now past my 36000Mi warranty and am getting a little worried. The dealer did say they would continue to help, but it has been over a year and no fix. I am sure at some point they are going to cut ties……

Thanks for any help you guys can offer!

they usually start to cut ties 2 yrs/24K past the 3 yr/36K bumper to bumper warranty...have they done an overnight draw test???

They have had the over night many times, they even had it all weekend last month. I was told they could not find any current pull. That was when they replaced the fuel pump relay.

I guess a stupid question, have they checked the charging system under load? is the truck charging as you are going down the road? I know that these trucks do not charge continously, you either have to be in tow/haul mode or have the headlights on for the truck to remain in the charging mode. Rich (MS3DALE) once told me about this...perhaps the truck is 'dead' while you are driving it and does not restart because it did not charge as you were going down the road...my question is how many times have they charged/changed the battery itself???

my truck has the same problem. I wake up the next morring the truck is dead. It have been in the shop 4 times for this problem. They never find anything. They said they tried every possible test out there.

then I would say it is a grounding issue (if the truck tends to die). there is gotta be some condition that does not allow it to charge or keep its charge...might not be a parastic draw in terms of power, but it might be something shorting out (not good)...

I had a weird problem with my boat several years ago. This boat has an automotive type engine (Ford 302 cu in EFI V8). It turned out that the battery was being drained right through the alternator to the ground. I assume bad diodes, or something like that. After boat sat for several days with a fully charged battery, it would not start. After I changed the alternator , I can leave the boat sit for two months with the battery connected and it will start.

What was weird was that I had the bad alternator bench tested and it was putting out correct amps at correct voltage. But something inside was cuasing the battery to bleed down right through the alternator. Go figure.

An interim solution is to install a battery negative terminal cut off switch so you can quickly disconnect the battery when you let the truck sit overnight.

If you suspect that the radio is bleeding down the battery, remove the radio fuse and see what happens.

Well it happend to me monday (truck was dead) The time before that was last march. It just happends out of the blue. The truck has been parked 2 days and it started right up tonight

I would say to replace the alternator (regardless if it is under warranty) as it might save you headaches down the road

MAN... something that intermittent sounds like a relay or something staying on. Really strange. That has to be a pain trying to figure it out.

yeah but wouldnt the relay show a parasitic draw??? I would eliminate the components one by one. pull all of the fuses for the radio, HVAC unit, Onstar (if equipped) and any other accessory that you may have (Homelink, GPS, etc). then drive around and see if the truck dies on you...dealership does not want to do any of that mess because they would not get paid by the warranty claim. If the truck stays alive, then I would progressively swap component fuses to see if one of them causes the truck to die

depending on time/mileage limits, you probably would push for repurchase if they cannot get the issue resolved, otherwise you are stuck like chuck

NOT if it is only sticking occasionally. The only time it would show up is if they happened to run a test WHILE it was sticking. Completely unrelated but I once had an employee with a Nissan 300ZX. About once a month or so it would continue pumping fuel after he shut it off and when he went out to start it the next time it was flooded. Turned out to be a fuel pump relay that was sticking in the on position but only every so often. It was a hair puller but the relay fixed it once he tried a new one. Either that or the problem just went away. I thought a relay might be sticking and draining the battery in this case. It is however just a guess.

Not necessarily a guess, perhaps it is a relay (which would suck since these trucks have TONS of relays nowadays)...I would say for him to see about getting a recording device to record if there is any change at night and what power is being pulled (if any) and just do it all himself

I left a map light on in my car all night several times and it did not drain (or seemingly even weaken) the battery. In order for this to happen, the draw must be substantial - a device that draws a lot of current, such as seat heaters, rear window defroster, etc.

I would also recommend load testing the battery. You never know, the battery itself could be the problem. There could be a batch of bad batteries. This would be a very easy, relatively inexpensive fix. Always start with the most obvious. A bad battery will lose its charge very quickly - it will fully charge and hold the voltage, but will have very limited reserve capacity. This is exactly what happens to batteries here in Florida when they are about thee years old. Which means that my truck is ready for a new battery even though the old one works good. But they fail very unexpectedly and without warning sometimes. This happens mostly due to high temperature and humidity and accelerated sulfation of the lead plates.

    • Which one, the AT or AS?   Starfire is made by Cooper/Goodyear but at $85/tire I'd think I'd need to level-set my expectations that they may not even be round 😉 But you're saying they're decent?   I'm already into this thing $1506 in parts, fluids, etc. Totaled all my receipts today. $250 of that was replacing an EGR and MAP sensor that were probably fine, but I'm not going to return the parts since they've been installed. I'm cheap, but not that cheap. I use it, I keep it!   I may or may not make money if I sell the truck at this point, but, that wasn't really the point. And if I billed my time, I'd be hosed for real. My thought on the tires is I "might" put 1,000 miles on before selling it. I just don't want to put absolute junk on it, that doesn't do anyone any good. If the Solus solidly isn't junk, I'll definitely consider them.
    • I leave mine as is. I'm always a trip away from riding on unpaved roads. Dealer can clean it when they prep it after I trade it in for another new truck.
    • I have these on two vehicles and love them. Pepper is one of them 😉
    • 4WD. Far as I know it came stock with P's and not LT's. Definitely planning to put P's on it, but stock is a 109 XL load rating so I should probably stick within that guideline.   No rebates on anything I can see at the moment. Discount Tire is offering $50 off, but Pep Boys is very competitive on price, and also carries all the off-brand stuff. Les Schwab always wants an arm/leg, but they do good work.   It still has the original spare. Goodyear Wrangler RT/S, thing looks like a tractor tire LOL!! How times have changed.
    • 2020 Sierra 2500 HD (base model) gas engine 4wd.    All 4 windows roll down on their own. Happens somewhat randomly after stop and engine off - when engine turned off, when walking away from vehicle before or after locks activated. Pulled the window fuse F14 Instrument Panel Fuse Block Right; the driver's side still activates from driver's side door panel; passenger and back seat windows activate from local switches on their doors but not from driver's side group of switches. Power mirrors don't activate with fuse removed either (same fuse for both circuits). Problem not solved.    How can they even activate with fuse removed but they are all still opening and can control from each door?  When they open on their own, I can shut them from the switch in each door, but they don't stay closed.    Seems to be activated somehow with key fob; something bumping the key fob in my pocket or just handling - removed key fob and took it far enough away and now the windows stay closed. Replaced key fob batty just in case, no change.    Sounds like some kind of wiring short or maybe electronics. Dealer will first replace electronic control module without checking anything else and I anticipate problem will still exist since their troubleshooting skills are limited to "do whatever the computer says".  In any case, keyfob seems to be activating the circuitry.    Surely I'm not the only one with this issue, but I can't find anything related on the site. What do yall think?   JohnRoy
