Tailgate Up Or Down...?

For those of you with tonneau covers (and cannot see your tailgate from inside the truck), do you ever wonder if you have left your tailgate down while you are driving? One time I left it down (with stuff on the tailgate - somehow it all stayed on my drive across town) and I have been paranoid ever since. Besides pulling over, getting out, and checking to see if it is up, does any have a device or a way of knowing if it is actually up or not? I did a quick search but couldn't find anything specific.

If your truck has "Backup Assist" (I'm not sure if it was available for your year model of truck), you will probably get a "Backup Assist OFF" message on your DIC, if the tailgate is down. (Or at least that's what my '07 does when the tailgate is down.)

Sometimes I wonder whether my zipper is up or down, so I just take a quick look from time to time

I've only left my tailgate down once since I've been running a tonneau cover over the last 9 years.

Whenever I have something really expensive back there, I worry about whether the tailgate fell down or not.

It would be easy to install a door switch and a dash mounted LED that comes on when the tailgate is open. Just use it to switch the ground leg and no power has to be run beyond the dash light.
