Throttle Body Questions

I cleaned up my throttle body today and when I took it off I found the two hoses at the bottom of the throttle body and I wondered if that was really necessary, if so why? Also will cleaning up my throttle body improve my MPG?

Since your from Wisconsin i suggest you keep the coolant lines on for the frigate cold temps you will encounter. The coolant keeps the throttle body from freezing and no it will not hurt hurt fuel economy.

Some people do a throttle body bypass for the summer months or in warm climates. I tried it and I could not notice any more HP although a tiny gain is possible. Fuel mileage difference would be negligable.

Do a search on throttle body bypass. There's a how to also.

I don't think that you would get much of any thing from doing the throttle body bypass, and it would hurt cold weather drive-ability :lol:

Well that was fast :dunno: Did someone loose some money on one? Anyway thank you i will be sure to steer clear of them. They really didn't make sence to me anyway!

The only vehicles that gain from a spacer are wet systems like a carburetor or TBI, port injection (dry) will see no gains since the fuel is injected at the valve.

i agree 100%...

 

and as for the coolant line i would keep it... your not gonna notice any difference plus the cold temps up there could cause the tb to freeze...

My Burb has the TBI system,I've been contemplating putting a spacer on it.I know they don't work on port injection and are iffy on TBIs.What do they actually do? Swirl the a/f mixture? Atomize better.More velocity?A few months ago I put a bigger cam in it and was thinking I might get a tad more HP. There's a 454 in it if that helps any....

You might see a little bit of boost in low-end torque, and an overall smoother torque curve with a spacer on your TBI motor; I doubt you'd see much by way of extra HP though. With a big block I'm not sure how the effect would compare to putting one on a small block. I've only seen results of it on a 350 TBI before.

Thanks for the input.I'm thinking any extra torque would help as I pull a 7-8,000lb. toy hauler with it several times a year.By the way,with the gearing it has and the tire size I run 3,000rpm when cruising in Dr(3rd) doing about 63 mph and 2,500 rpm in OD on flat ground.I also have an external tranny cooler I'll be putting on when the weather warms up a little...

      So you are saying that there is a water to oil transmission fluid "heater" along with an air to atf heat exchanger?  Where do I get hold of a diagram/microfiche of that routing?   Is the water to oil cooler a bar plate job between the trans thermostat and the air to oil cooler? In the 2022 10L80/90? valve body there is a valve called the Cooler Thermostat Valve that gets modded to eliminate regulation to the flow to the cooler.  There are two styles - the 2022 has no brass thermostat, but later versions seem to have it. Testing today after the valve body kit install, zero change in gauge temp unloaded - 180F at 84*F unloaded, so the atf heater is doing its job.   The positive so far is the lag in shifting from R to D has been eliminated.   There is a brass "thermostat" in the Cooler Thermostat Valve that is removed with the NextGen kit for the 10L1000 - 135F gauge temp with a 5000lb boat in small rolling hills at 85*F.

      Wonder what happened to the "MEGA"max 8.3 rumors.   I haven't had any rust issues, but the wax sure is ugly.   Good to hear, considering the joint venture with International ended.

      I still use kerosene and a brush for clean up since it's easily available to me. Then pressure wash if possible. Seems like on the really thick goo, brake clean doesn't work so well, at least for me.   have also used simple green or similar on light coatings of oil/dirt. Again brushing it and agitating

      I agree and why it seemed to make logical sense to swap it out before it did have a failure mode. I have no idea what the typical mileage was reached on the Allison 6 speed and variants from the beginning of the Duramax engine series but they were not putting through as much power either other than maybe the 2017 to 2019 models relative to the 2020 model trucks with the 10 speed. I am guessing there were some changes/upgrades over the years with that transmission as the engine in front of it certainly changed in output.    I see some reviews of the Ram with the new 8 speed and comments about how great this transmission will be relative to the Ford and GM, but only time will really reveal how it all plays out as use and abuse always eventually show how good something is or what weakness it may have.
