People Not Running E Rated Tires On The Hd's...

Got a question for you guys that have downgraded from the load range E 10 ply to the 8 ply tires that are normal priced. Have you noticed a difference- good or bad? I rarely haul anything near the weight this thing is capable of and really only bought the HD because it is so much more of a truck and I wanted the snow plow prep pkg. for plowing the now rare snowstorms here in PA, so will I lose anything in normal driving with normal 8 ply tires with just the extra weight of the HD truck on them? Does the sidewall flex too much when cornering? How much better is the ride going away from 10 ply tires? any MPG gains? Anything else I should worry about?

Thanks in advance!

I was running on 265/75/16 Michelen LTX ATs on my last HD. Worked great.

I don't blame ya, if for not wanting to run E-rated tires if your not going to be hauling a lot of heavy loads to warrant them.

I'd think you'd be ok. If you're not hauling anything. A buddy of mine has a 2000 1 ton crew cab, with an 8' bed, and he wasn't using 10 ply tires. He alway's had a load on it to.

It depends on the size of tires. My 285s at D loads will carry more weight than the E load at 245 or 265. Plus I haven't really experienced anything different. Its a HD, it rides a little on the stiff side anyway. Mine don't have a soft sidewall either, I haven't experienced them folding over. So if you can save your back and your wallet a little cash then I would say you are just fine.

I do tow a good sized trailer with my duallys. I wouldn't put the cheaper tires on it, even if I drove it empty. I also think the E load range tires will last longer than a D.

When I bought my first HD truck I used to use E range tires, then wanted to go wider, and they were only D in that size. I never noticed an E wearing longer then a D, they wore the same. Now if you are constantly hauling alot of weight, and E would be a good tire to go with. The E range tire usually are 235 or 245 85 R 16, i like the 265 75 R 16 tire, it handles better and cornering feels more stable.

I use 265 D rated BFG's and tow plenty of weight. Have towed loads over 20,000 lbs. and no problems. The triple ply sidewall eases my mind a little. I used to always have 265 E rated because of the weight rating, but the D's ride so much better. Nitrogen in the tires really helps also for ride.

Hey Roofer, I didn't know you were a mod on here, small world.

I agree, why put up with the rough ride if you don't have too.

Load range E tires are built tougher than D range tires so they cost a little more. Not using the proper tires Is not only putting you at risk, but also the motorists around you. Plus it's a great way to void your insurance. Not a good idea.

Hey CC, yep been here since the site started. Great site, tons of members with alot of info.

The 265 load range D are rated the same as the stock 245 load range E and with lower pressure.

Talk about price......The LR F tires on our F550 are about $300 a piece. gets expensive, let alone normal operation and repair costs of a Ford.
