Dic Controls, 2006 2500hd

I am looking to install the DIC steering wheel controls on my 2006 GMC 2500HD truck. I am bidding on a steering wheel on e-bay and I have read on the forum I need a "clock spring"? Where could I find this and is there anything else needed for this mod. Also some people seem to say the truck needs to be programmed. I am not a dealer fan because it always seems to be a process to get anything fixed. Do the controls always need to be programmed, will a GM scan tool work at my local garage? I have the Bose speakers and the SLE2 package if that helps.

-Thanks

I had my 2004 2500HD upgraded with the DIC control a couple of years ago. Got the wheel off ebay and clock spring from an on-line GM parts dealer. You will have to take your truck to a dealer for reprogramming of the ECM to make all the new goodies in the DIC come to life. I had my dealer install the parts and the programming and it was around $200. Well worth it however.

Plenty of info can be found here on the site. I did it to my 2006 Sierra CC in November and LOVE IT!! I got all sorts of goodies out of it. 90% of the battle is finding a dealer who will do the programing for you. I dropped my truck off for a week at the local GMC dealer. I printed out a sheet from one of the posts here detailing what the GM tech needs to do.

Numerous times I was told that it cannot be done. I politely insisted that it could and still I was met with lots of resistance in adding this to my truck. I ended up installing the clock spring (most expensive part around $300) my self. I am fairly mechanically apt so I was able to get it done in about 1.5 hrs. Its a huge harness and I had to sort out an alarm system that the dealer put on it when I bought it new. I ended up cutting the after market alarm out and putting the new steering wheel on.

The wheel will light up and that is it. No truck will recognize this on its own. You must have it reprogrammed by a GM dealership and get a new VIC number for the truck. That will cost you 50 bucks. I found a former co-worker who helped me out and listened beyond it cannot be done. I literally printed out a step by step sheet from this site and we got on the phone and called GM. My friend told them the dealer code and what he was trying to do. About an hour later I had everything working and was down the road with my new toy.

The instructions are on the second post.

Good luck, you will need it!! Its sad I had to take my Sierra to a Chevy dealer to make this all work but its all GM so who cares. Looking back on the project its long costly but well worth it!! Oh by the way when your looking for a part number for the clock spring make sure you have the one for the HD model I have a two stage air bag and from what I understand you only have a one stage.
