What Happened To "full Service" Gas Stations?

Just my rant here, but in the 60s and 70's you could not find a self serve gas station. You pulled up to the pump, and a polite kid pumped your gas and requested to check the fluids. The good shops cleaned your windshields front and rear if they had time. I'm not lazy, but I like that service. I wonder what put that service out of business. I was one of those kids pumping gas and always got a pocket full of tips.

I believe in NJ, you cannot pump your own gas.

Oregon too.I remember those days too Art.there actually a time when ''service'' meant something, now it's get your f'n gas and get the f**ck out.Remember filling up a fullsize Chevy tank for $4-$5 ? In Washington we called the gas ''regular''or ethyl''

I was also one of those gas station attendant's. I really liked that job. I worked at an old Sohio station back in '76. I learned a lot working there. Brakes, tune-up's, changing/fixing tire's, oil change's, you name it. There are still a few station's around here, that have both self and full service pump's. I miss the old day's.

Gramps, they used to even check the tire pressure. Remember getting drinking glasses with a fill up.

Being an anarchist I guess I would not want state mandated pumpers because that is probably all you would get rude pumpers for the same price as self service.

Jeff, you are so correct.Watching my grandaughters grow up and seeing their attitudes and the way they talk to their parents and sometimes grammy and grampy makes me wanna give 'em a fist sammich. When the kids learned of ''child abuse'' and how they could get away with murder(sometimes literally) just by claiming child abuse our rights as parents went into the dumpster...no spanking,no physical punishment..non of the shit we went through as kids...but you know what ? we turned out OK,I still loved my mom and dad even when I got punished for something stupid I did...OK,done ranting

I don't know if I took more ass whooping's from my dad, or if I got more in school. I alway's tell my grandkid's that they would not survive one week, if they lived in the 60's and 70's.
