nick-o Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 So... I'm getting really tired of spining tires when it snows. How easy do you think it would be to get and install a G80 differential? I saw a thread talking about getting a whole new axle from a junkyard... and am not really enthused about that. Are there any other options? Last, How much do think it is gonna put me out the door? Just the part though I can do the work myself. Any, info would be appreciated! Nick
BuckFeverZ Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 If you going to spend the money, don't put a G80 in. I would go with the Detroit Tru-Trac
solarjustin Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 I had asked the same question before about the G80. I have seen prices for the G80 in the $400ish range, I have also seen junk yard listings for the whole axle from $700-$1100 range. I want to do the same thing to my truck, just has not got done yet. I like the axle idea because I have the tools to do that myself, but don't like the idea of getting a axle that you have no idea about its previous life. I also like the differential idea, but I don't have the tools of skill to take that on myself.
nick-o Posted January 29, 2009 Author Posted January 29, 2009 Is that a full time locking differential because I'm gonna have to drive it in the summer to when I have full traction. It's mostly a driving truck for now. Never mind.... looked it up on detroit locker's website and it looks solid, thanks.

Schmids5.3l Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 If you going to spend the money, don't put a G80 in. I would go with the Detroit Tru-Trac +1. Detroit Tru Trac or an Eaton LSD...they can be had for under $500 on E-bay brand new. The G80 seems to be a piece of shit...outside of going in a straight line.
pastorscott Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Simple solution: Go to summit racing and look for a track - loc or a lock rite or quick lock. Its a conversion to your exsisting differential that you can do in your drive way in about 2 hours with no fancy tool or no how. You just take off the cover , remove the c-clips put the axels out about 1/2 inch . remove the 2 side spider gears and replace with locking cogs and out it all together. The price is about 300 t0 $400. One of them is made by Detroit locker. These systems give you the best real true locking differntial. No special lubes or clutches to ware out. And unlike the G-80 it wont explode. Scott
pastorscott Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 http://www.powertrax.com/powertrax/lockright.html I forgot - here is one link to get you started Scott
grampadirt Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 I have a Detroit Locker with 4:56 gears in my Burb and love it.I go alot of places and don't even need to engage the front diff..

It's a clutch style LSD. The Tru-Trac is a Torsen style gear driven unit. No need to worry about additive or wear.

TruTrac was also known as one of the great rappers of his time, if you are in to that sort of music.
killterrorists Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 How about a Eaton E-Locker vs. a Detroit TrueTrac LSD? What would be the longest lasting and most durable?
pastorscott Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 Always remember - all those fancy lockers the guys are talking about YOU CANT put in since it is very involved and even most mechanics cant set up the ring and pinion which would have to be reset. Now the one I told you about the Lock-Rite or Quick Locker is a easy in the drive way install. Scott
jrrod2004 Posted January 29, 2009 Posted January 29, 2009 I say go with the G80 Edit: Ok, I read up on the Detroit TrueTrac limited slip. I think I will take that but now I am running into two questions for myself: 1) How the hell do I figure out if I got 8.5" axle or 8.625" axle? 2) Anybody know of a good axle shop that is competent to do this swap in the Austin and greater surrounding area?
Ryan00TJ Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 I run a Detroit Softlocker in my Super Dana 35 rear on my Jeep. Powertrax Lockrite up front in the Dana 30. After having a locker in the rear of the Jeep for 8 years and driving it almost everyday, I can say that its the best IMO. Very strong, almost impossible to break. Expensive but worth it IMO. It replaces your stock carrier and spider gears. Requires setting up the R@P after install. The lockrite is a cheaper locker that installs inside the stock carrier. It's a DIY install though. The G80 in my truck seems to be doing allright but I have not tested it enough to really give a good opinion on it.
