Blower Motor Resistor Vs. New Blower Motor

Recommended Posts

A couple of times my HVAC fan wouldn't work except on high (it was spotty, happened like three or four times), now it doesn't work at all. Should I just assume it is the resistor and replace that on a hunch? Are the chances of the resistor being bad more probable than the blower motor itself being bad?

As always, thanks for your feedback. Were it not for this forum I wouldn't even have known about the blower motor resistor.

Pull the blower motor resistor and see if it looks burned....also inspect the connector running to the resistor for signs of overheating. If you want to check out the motor itself jumper 12v straight to it and see if it spins up.

+1 Check the plug going to the resister....Friend of mine had the same prob...tuns out that the plug had a burn't connection in the plug in...

I just replaced the resistor in my 00 last week. Make sure you check the harness to see if it is melted at all if so the harnesss needs to be replaced. Mine looked fine but the resistor looked ugly. I lost #1 and #2 speeds, after changing just the resistor all is back to normal. I would start there it is fairly inexpensive and takes about 10 min to replace

Picked up a new resistor, will install and respond back. Picked up an ACDelco unit, glad to see that it's made in Slovania (I hear they're at the forefront of blower resistor technology).

I owe the cheapness (35.00 for new ACDelco unit) and expediancy (didn't have to do a bunch of troubleshooting or isolating of bad part) of this repair to our forum. Resistor replacement did the job. I was a little disappointed that the large plug had to be turned around to fit the new (updated design) unit, it kind of puts a strain on the wires. Also learned that my blower motor was made by Bosch in Mexico...didn't expect that. At the risk of sounding glib, anybody who pays to have this repair done should be ashamed of themselves.

Where is the resistor located? My '05 runs on 1,2,3,4 but not 5. Never bothered me, but worried it will just die eventually. Had the resistor changed just before the warranty ran out, but now it has come back again. figures, I guess.

It's right next to the fan (beneath the glovebox). The bulk of the resistor is mounted in the duct. The visible parts are a (I believe 6 wires) 6 wire connector and a couple of very small bolts holding the unit into the duct by the fan. If you buy the replacement part you'll be able to easy find it under the dash (just find the thing that looks like what you just bought).
