Oil Question/spark Plug Question

I have read a couple of threads on here on the oil issues. I just purchased this 03 silverado that has 109k on it. The owner didnt change the oil every 3k. More like every 7k. I dont know what kind of oil he used but im wanting to get this thing up to my par. I know quite a few ppl that swear by Amsoil. Some ppl think it is over kill to pay that much for oil but can you really beat it. I know that they say 25k mile oil changes are ok with this oil. I wouldnt run it that long in mine but i would like to change it every 8 months or so.

Does anyone here have any input on amsoil. I have not personally used it but like i said, i know a few ppl that swear by it and by looking at stuff on their website and other statistics they look pretty strong. I think mobil 1 is next in line with their top of the line oil they offer and pennsoil platnium is up there with them too.

I just got the oil changed by a shop but i will be changing it myself after this initial change that i let them do.

I also got the tranny flushed and new fluid in there. It was pretty dirty looking. Next on the list is plugs. Should i go back with the GM plugs since they are supposed to be good for 100k.

When it comes to oil, SEARCH. You have no idea how many times this has been discussed and argued about. I personally use Mobil1 and change every 5k (as did the previous owner, and the truck currently has almost 177.5k miles on it).

Do a search for spark plugs too, but the general consensus seems to be to go with the AC Delco Iridium plugs (that's what I did, and I've had no problems).

thanks for the fast reply. Believe me, i know how aggrivating it is for newbies to ask questions that have been asked before millions of times..lol

On the atv sites the question was.. "what is the best dual exhaust". and " what are the first 3 mods that need to be done to my quad".

Just bare with me. I just found the site and are rushing to post a couple of quick questions before i head off to Church. I will have tons of time this week to search and search this site.. Looks as if there are a ton of members on here and many archives to go through.

One of my service trucks (2000) 5.3L EXT cab 4x4 has 307000 mi and has never had an oil change until the OLM went on and has used Mobil 1 & still gets 3000mi to a quart of oil and never been tore into.

Changing oil on modern vehicles with fuel injection with all the emissions systems working correctly is a waste of money and resources.

I always figure, frequent oil changes are cheap insurance to keep the engine running like new for years. I have yet to let the OLM come on before changing it. I start getting nervous after 3000 miles and usually push it to around 5000. Guess I'm just old fashioned.

I use royal purple...I like it.

I change it every 5-6000 km...so about 3500miles...of course I pay next to nothing a quart for it :D:D

New filter every time

One of the best things you can do to clean the internals of your engine of gunk/sludge is buy some cheep ass oil...like Qstate or similar, drop your old oil out, put in the new cheep oil, except have it down a quart or so, top it up ti the full mark with diesel, and run the engine for 10-15 min....no load...do not drive it this way, just idle.

Dump the oil out after 15 min have passed, and let it drain dry. Put in some good oil...Mobile, AMS, RP,....what ever you decide and like, and a new filter.

Guaranteed you will have a clean, less noisy engine and your oil will come out nice and clean on the next change. Its like doing an engine flush...but the flush stuff they use at most places is a solvent, the diesel is not, it actually has some lubricity, and is really good at eating carbon deposits. It will also seep into small passages that may be blocked, like the ones in lifters or in the crank and chew up the carbon in there.

On and your question on plugs...I use NGK TR55 platinum's in my truck, they're good for about 50K KM's I would say. I would never leave a plug in for 100K miles...that's retarded. You'd never get them out at that point in time anyway....they'd be part of the head.

Some of the other guys on here run the copper version of the TR55, cheeper, more frequent changes...but they conduct better.

well i put new plugs in there. Infact that was the original plugs and wires that were still in it.. 109k miles later.

I got AC delco iridium plugs for it and i was reading on the box that they have an expectancy of 100k miles.

The original GM plugs will last 100k and more and come out NO PROBLEM. I just pulled out a set of plugs from my 04 Sierra that has 101,000 miles on it and the plugs looked just fine. If anything, the wires will need to be replaced because after that many miles the boots get stuck on the plugs and you will not get all 8 off without breaking at least one.

I paid $70 for a new set at the dealer with a trade discount, but also see them on eBay for $25 as well. (748GG on mine and they are original delco wires)

As to the oil, synthetic oil will break down those deposits over time and clean up your engine. Some people recommend cleaning out an engine, but if you flush a lot of crap out quickly, clogged oil pump screens have been known to happen.

I live in Cleveland. We not only use road salt, but we dig it out from under Lake Erie just so we can spread it all over the roads. If a car isn't rusted in at least a half dozen spots by it's 10 year anniversary, someone must garage it for the winter.

i use mobil 1 since i got mine . i change it every 5 k its easy to keep track of, ie 5,10, 15,20,25,30, etc. my truck has 93k on it and burns .5 to 1 quart every 5k. i was courios on the plugs so changed them out at 75k clean as a whistle, replaced them with delco plugs

and installed Granatelli wires.
