This area is kinda up my alley.  If you are interested in the biggest/badest 4x4 out there, the Prarie is one of them.  I would also look into the new Yamaha Grizzly.  I know two guys that just bought them.  Very nice quads....actually, if I were to buy one, it would be the Grizzly.  The only thing that it has over the Prarie is the IRS.  Very nice!  Polaris is coming out with a 700 twin also....so dont rule them out either (I'm not a big Polaris fan, but I had to be fare).  And if you wait long enough, Honda has the 650 Rincon coming out...it also will have IRS.  But right now, I would recommend the Grizzly...

Oh if you are wondering I am a Honda man...ride red!  My current ride is a 2000 400EX (I prefer the sport quads)

Well I am a Polaris fan as I've always had Polaris ATV's and sleds.

My last one, a 1995 Scrambler 4x4 400 was a friggin beast.  Nothing short of a Banshee could catch it.  But the Scrambler had one HUGE advantage...AWD!  Speed is great if you can do it on wide open plains, but a lot of ATV riding is done on trails, mudpits, sand, etc, etc.  As such the combonation of Polaris's big engines, auto PVT's (a snowmobile trans in an ATV) and auto 4WD make them uncatchable in the trails.  At least this was from my experience.

Me and a couple of buddies would always get flak for buying Polaris's and not Honduh's.  That was until we schooled them in those trails.  All we needed to do was mash the gas to it's stop and hang on. No shifting (transmission never has a break in power delivery) and the auto 4WD system take over in corners.  It wasn't uncommon for us to have to stop every few miles and wait for them to catch up.  Needless to say, they never ridiculed us again and a few of them even joined ranks with us.  Not to mention that Polaris took a look at the ATV market, looked for innovative ways to improve them and now all the others are copying them.

Evidently many other riders are doing the same because Polaris, once a no name in the ATV market, were laughed upon (due to those innovations I mentioned before) by Yamaha, Kawasaki and Honduh about 10-15 years ago.  Well, Polaris is now vieing to take the #1 sales position over from Honduh (if they already haven't).  Who's laughing now?

The Yamaha Grizzly as well as a few other ATV's were answers to Polaris's large displacement ATV's like the Magnum 425 and the Sportsman 500.  Now Polaris is about to up the ante again with one kick butt 4 wheel independent suspension, 700cc ATV.

No offense, but dont try to put a 400EX against a Polaris scrambler.  Aint gonna happen on the trails....unless the rider is VERY BAD.  Like I said, not a flame, but they are TWO different quads all together.

Which one are you saying is superior then?  I am confused by your last comment.

Fact is both are 400cc's (well the Polaris is 378) both 4WD.  They should be fairly comprable.

Fact of the matter was, those in our group riding their honda's gave us lip, after about an hour of having their rear ends handed to them on a golden platter, they shut their mouths.

We have to Kawasaki KVF *closest version to the prairie* even though we have a 400 and a 300 they rock!  They really take a a beating and there a blast to use!!

I say they rock IMO

Well, I was stating that the Polaris is not really going to touch a 400EX in the woods.  The polaris does not handle as well and weighs a good amount more.  Its all up to the rider...and I CAN ride/race my 400EX....I've been riding ATV's for over 10 years now and I ended my 3rd race season this year.  I dont see any polaris's in my line up for harescrambles (woods racing)....I think that says it all...Now like I said before, I am not making this personal, but just clearing things up.  Just because you can beat a bad rider on a honda, does not make the polaris superior.  Oh BTW, what kind of honda was it???

I dont see anything wrong with it. If your looking for a good solid 4x4, then it will probably be great. If your looking for a 4x4 that also has some sport quad characteristics, take a look at the Yamaha Wolverine.
