Extended Warranties

I just purchased a 2009 Silverado 4x4 Crewcab 6.2, max pakage with the 3.73 gears. I was offered an extended warranty which will cover everything inc the nav system. The cost is $1400 for 6 years or 72000 miles. I need some input as what I should do.

Lots of factors to consider here. First of all, keep in mind that some folks just never buy extended warranties as a matter of course. While other's just sign up by default. Nothing really wrong with either option as long as you know what you want and what you're getting in to.

 

Do you plan on keeping the truck for a long time? What does the ext'd warranty cover? Is it bumper to bumper? What's excluded/included? Is it provided by GM, the dealer, or another company? Is there a deductible? When does it start/end? What's their cancellation policy? Where can you get it serviced or repaired?

 

If everything adds up, you've read the fine print and you think an extended warranty is for you, don't forget that you can negotiate the price on extended warranties.

I did not get the extended warranty on the truck, but I did when I bought my trailer. A lot of it is peace of mind. One thing to look at, and my neighbor found out the wrong way, is will the extended warranty replace the original warranty? Some extended warranties have a deductible, somewhere around $100.00 each time you take the truck in for any warranty work, where the original warranty does not require a deductible. Something to look into. When does the extended warranty kick in?

My Chevy connection is actually a member of the dealership owners family. I'm throwing that out there because he's an insider on a lot of things. He moves a lot trucks for the dealership and his advice is always buy the GM Major Guard if you can afford it. There's no question about his motive because he doesn't care if you buy it from him or from another dealership via the Internet. I paid $1650 for a 6 year/72,000 mile GM Major Guard with a $0 deductible. I shopped around and at the time (Feb 2007) it was a great deal from a GM dealership in PA.

 

I know I'll fight them if anything goes wrong and they try and blame it on my 4" Rancho Lift, but all it takes is one ABS pump or computer module and at least you'd be covered.

 

I have a loaded LTZ Crew 4x4 so I also figured it would be good to have for anything from the DVD player to the sun roof motor.

You don't need to buy it with the truck purchase and you don't need to buy it at the same dealer. I waited until after I'd purchased the truck, then shopped around. I ended up saving $400 from the price the original dealer quoted. Some local dealers wouldn't deal on the list price and a couple would. I wanted to buy local just for the piece of mind. Of course if you need to finance the cost of the warranty, then you'd be stuck with the dealer selling the vehicle.

might as well get it. if you keep the truck for a long time it'll probably pay itself off. and if you plan on selling it its a good selling point. is it third party? i tend to think that dealers are more lenient on honoring the warranty when its third party- for example, my truck has been covered for a couple things that i probably would have had a hard time with if it was under the gm warranty. for the third party ones, all they do is call up the company and tell them what's wrong- they usually don't send out an adjustor unless its something big or out of the ordinary. and its only a hundred dollar deuctible for me.

 

oh, word of advice, if you have a deductible, try grouping repairs together if you can- this way its all covered under one bill. for example, my horn shorted out and it wasnt a big deal to me so i didnt bother until i had a something else go wrong. i lumped all the repairs together and only had to pay one deductible.

When I purchased my Suburban in 2006, I bought the extended warranty offered at the dealer I bought the truck from. It was from a third party (some company out of Houston TX) It was a 3 year/36000 mile warranty with a $50 deductible every time I had something fixed, even if it were 3-4 things at once (one $50 deductible). If I remember right, it was around $1100 or $1200 added in to the price of my truck. The main reason I bought the warranty was because the truck was used and the factory warranty had expired. In the long run, it more than paid for itself. Over the 3 years I've had the AC control replaced, a power mirror switch, two power lock actuators, a power window switch, the steering shaft, and within the last month of the warranty, I had to get my entire rear end rebuilt. I just had some clunking noises when I would hit a bump (I assumed it was the suspension) they looked at it and said all my pinion bearings and gears and everything was shot. The warranty people were reluctant to cover it at first, they even sent an adjuster from Houston to come up here and see the truck for himself. But once he saw the damage, they ended up paying for it. It was almost $3000 worth of repairs. So I guess I did get my moneys worth in the long run.

Wrong. If that was the case, extended service contracts would not be available. They are there because THEY make a profit. Think about it... if the odds are that you would benefit from it, they would no longer be in business. Common sense says they have the odds... just like the casinos, the lottery, etc.

 

I have never bought an extended service contract and so far I am ahead of the game.

What/who is the warranty company?

If its a GMPP warranty (and most others) the clock starts running the day you buy

it so why bother? So it doesn't actually extend the length of coverage!

Best off buying a GMPP warranty near the end of your 3/36 mfr. anyhoo.

Sure it costs a bit more but you will have longer coverage.

Remember you already have a 5/100k powertrain warranty that covers almost

anything that would break after the 3/36 is up.

If I was getting an extended warranty...(and I did on the Caddy)

I would not get anything but GMPP.

ANY GM dealer in the US will honor it if you happen to be away from home and something breaks.

Like the other posts here,if you are going to buy one gmpp major gaurd is the way to go.I've seen some shady stuff by the independant warranty companies( junkyard engines and trannies,wait for weeks for approval of repairs,pro-rated coverage)

I got an extended waranty on my 06 Sierra for two reasons 1) it was used, factory was out. 2)Better safe than sorry.

I'd be torn. if it was 0 or low deductable and was good at any GM dealership then maybe it's worth it. When I was looking fora used truck the fine print would have excluded nearly any repairs I would have needed and even the covered ones were up for interpretation based on use of the vehicle. These companies make money by bringing in way more than they pay out.

 

Personally i would get the cost down or just take that money and put it in the bank. your first three years are covered and you could turn that saved money into a whole lot in the next three years.

What is name of underwriter (the extended warranty company)?

 

Do a Google search on that company.

 

Might answer a few questions.
