I took my 2006 Silverado 1500 96,000 k on it to the dealership for regular maintenance, they informed me that my rear diff fluid needed to be replaced I approved. I recieved a call 1 hr later saying that my posi governor had some teeth sheered off. I went down to confirm this and it was true, they are telling me the whole posi system needs to be replaced they cant just replace the little gear that has the teeth sheared off. Anyone else have this happen or know if this is true that they cant just replace the gear? Any help with this would be appreciated

Thank you

This is a frequent problem with my repairs. I need just a little part, but can only get the whole works! If I could get just the little part, then I could replace just that at a much reduced cost.

Other times it is recommended and best to replace a whole unit. This is because if one part has failed, the rest of the parts will begin failing in the near future, so a long lasting repair would be one where the whole unit is replaced. Other times certain parts are "matched" to other parts and one new part along with other old parts will not work as it should, so best to replace the whole works.

But I think the bottom line is THEY can only get the whole works and don't have the part number for just that gear. I'm sure somewhere in this world that gear exists and maybe someone could track it down and find it. But I have spent hours trying to find these parts and not had any luck. They probably know this and are not going to waste their time.

The other option would be to find the part in a wrecking yard. But I don't know if a wrecking yard would sell just that part or would want to sell the whole works? And I don't know if a dealer would install a used part?

I have one other question if I just leave it the way it is, is that bad will it harm the rest of the diff? could I just have the remaining teeth removed?

Thanx
