Spare Tire On Leveled Truck

Recommended Posts

I see most of the people on the site with the NNBS trucks have a leveling kit of some type and they have also bumped up to a 33" tire. What are you guys doing for a spare tire?

Is this something you worry about or would you simply just use the spare on the front and keep the rears the same if needed?

you could probable get away with keeping your stock 265 tire if going to a 285, but i wouldnt drive on it long at all just to get you off the road or get to a tire shop

*claps* that is a good question. thanks for posting it actually haha

No problem, just curious what everyone is doing especially those that travel with the trucks that have larger tires.

not too much of a concern with open diffs. i would only drive on it long enough to get to the nearest tire shop. in the event i had a flat on a back tire, and if i was feeling particularly paranoid, i would swap a front tire to the back and run the spare up front to protect the G80. again not a huge concern with open diffs.

The G80 only engages with a 100 RPM differential in speed. And only up to 25 MPH. The G80 won't enagage from this small of a tire dia differential.

So there is no need to worry then about causing a problem by running 275/60/20's measuring about 33" compared to the stock spare tire then? It seems pointless and possibly a nightmare to swap to a 285 on the 17" wheel to simply keep the diameter similar.

Not in the short term, no. Most newer vehicles have a tiny spare that is fine for use until you can get to a tire shop.

no need to worry with open differentials. driving on a slightly smaller tire will have a similar effect to driving in a circle (inside tire rotates less than the outside tire).

I have that same size tire now too, and I don't worry about it. The G80 will be fine. I know if it happens, I will take it easy, and if I am very far away from civiliazation, I may just swap the 17 to the front for piece of mind.

Ok, Figured I would ask and see what everyone else is doing. I would probably move it to the front if possible if I planned on going a long distance. I am not worried about flats close to home its easy to call and get someone to come out. Its when your on a trip that it becomes more of a concern.

The only time I would worry about a smaller tire in the mix is when the vehicle has 4wd and uses low range, then that's where the breakage starts...Otherwise I know some people who run 3 different tire sizes and it looks pretty freaking goofy, but they have no drivetrain issues.

I upgraded to 285/65/18's with my leveling kit, and I went ahead and replaced the spare tire to a 285/70/17. The two tires are identical in overall diameter.

My reasoning was I tow my car on a trailer long distances at least once a month, and if something happened to one of my tires, I not only want the same diameter to keep going the rest of the trip without having to look for a tire shop along the interstate, but I wanted the higher load range to match the rest and have peace of mind.

YMMV

FYI, a 285/70/17 fits perfect in the spare tire "area" under the truck :)
