Clay Bar Before Or After Compound?

I would clean the areas you want to compound and do the compounding... THEN wash, clay bar, and wax.

 

You definitely want to wash the truck after compounding. Otherwise all of that grit will be on the paint.

I would clay bar first, to get the contaminants out of the paint. But it may not make any difference.

Wash (Preferrably with something to remove any wax on the clear coat, say, Dawn Dish Soap. To those that don't know, don't EVER use Dawn any other time.)

Clay (Removing ANY remaining contaminants, claying is necessary before doing ANYTHING to the paint to prevent from creating additional swirls from embedded contaminants)

Compound (Now with only clear coat left, you can safely blend your scratch)

Polish (Optional, but really sets it off)

Wax (Also, consider a paint sealant, even something like Megs NXT 2.0...far superior to regular waxes in long term durability and maximum UV protection. Also, never use CHEAP wax...never go below $10 can (Megs Gold Class))

I agree with John. I don't guess the compound or clay bar timing matters as much as making sure the surface is as clean as possible before both steps.

Use the LEAST abrasive compound you can that will do the job. I like the Meguiar's light polish myself.

I have always used Liquid Glass as a polish, and Meguires NTX wax. Leaves a deep wet shine that looks great.
