Oil Filter Location

I have a question about the oil filter location on my 98 GMC Sierra. The Haynes book shows the filter up and down. Mine is sideways. What is the normal location. I also noticed that the airfilter is larger than the one that pops up in the parts house computer.

A little more info on your truck would help. V6, V8?

The book is wrong. No Chevy oil filters are upside down (open end down I presume you mean). The oil filters all face up, lower left side of block at rear at oil pan level.

On the air filter, there are 2 versions. All Z71 vehicles get a bigger filter element than non-Z71 optioned. Only the filter is larger, the air box is exactly the same for all V8's and the large filter will fit. One should say Standard and the other Heavy Duty (HD) in the parts house computer. If not then find another parts house, theirs is wrong.

Note - The HD air cleaner option is also available as a stand alone option on most models.

PS-I have often found Haynes manuals often lack model specificity, they are generic in nature and often have drawings etc that don't even relate to the model the book purports to service.

The truck has the Vortec 5.7 liter engine. I didn't mean upside down. Open end at the top like the older model V8s.

So, you have a 350 and its a 4 wheel drive truck, right?

I assumed you had a 4x2 but its obvious its a 4x4 if mounted sideways and I missed that. 4x2 models its mounted to the block and open end up. The 4x4 has different filter mounting to clear the front drive shaft, it sits sideways above the front drive shaft. If its a 4x2 truck and the filter is mounted sideways then the engine has been swapped with one from a 4x4 truck.

Also, note the 4x4 uses a different oil filter than the 4x2's. Its smaller in size and they won't interchange.

1999up NBT style its mounted on the block on all models, no front ds interference.
