Horsepower For The 5.3l

Trucks! had an episode on this past weekend where they were doing a test with a Bully Dog tune for gas mileage.

They dyno'd the truck stock (09, 5.3L CC 4X4) and it rated at 220HP I want to say. I thought the stock HP was 315?

Im wondering if this is at the rear wheels vs. the flywheel?

The dyno was done at the rear wheels of course. I bet the Chevy rating is at the flywheel.

they are always rated at the flywheel...what did the programmer do for it?

12 hp... :D

That's respectable but at what cost? Did they say anything about fuel milage, better or worse?

Was anything else done to the truck like exhaust, mufflers, cats?

Full stock truck. The mileage gain was about .5-1 MPG, but it included the driving coach which helped you drive more efficiently, which increased the MPG about 3-4 MPG.

Driving coach, what exactly is that? Sorry I missed the show, seen it advertised but didn't watch it :D

Yeah it was actually a pretty good show.

Driving coach was a feature on the programmer that told you where/when to leave off the gas or how much pressure to apply for optimum full mileage. It really worked well.

made 12 HP on the 93 tune, only 6 on the 87/89 tune.

but it was a full stand-alone gauge that could display a number of perameters, including transmission temp. which might be nice for those who tow.

The driving coach sounded like it would be similar to that nagging GPS voice.

you can accomplish the same result with a rubber ball on the center console....ball rolls back, you accelerated to fast.....ball rolls forward, you're breaking to hard. :D lol

I think $400 might be a bit excessive. if it were priced around $250-275, it would be a better choice.

Yeah, GM's rating is at the flywheel.

OMG...

...Either something is wrong...or that truck has the worst case of drive line loss I have ever seen.

At the standard 15%, the truck should have ~268 at the wheels.

If those numbers are correct, that is a drive line loss of around 35%.

Someone mentioned one on here somewhere that was about $100 and coached you via bar graphs. Would be nice if you wanted to maximize your mileage. But as someone said, the rubber ball would work really well and be cheap.

Really who is going to watch that thing and do what it tells you. If I could save 2mpg doing 55 instead of 70 its not going to happen. When he drove them both the same it was like a 1 mpg better.
