Paint Fading

Does anyone know how long GM warranties it's paint. I have a 99 Silvy and the sun has killed my paint on the top of the cab and on the hood. Only got bad over the past 8 months or so. A buddy said that he had his Silvy completely repainted for free by the dealership when it was 10 or 12 years old. Does anyone know if GM does this and if you have to be the original owner or not?

IT is my understanding that paint is covered under the bumper-to-bumper warranty.

 

Now, it is also my understanding that there is a "rust thru" warranty that has longer coverage than b-to-b, but, as indicated, it pertains to corrosion, and NOT to paint --- though it is kinda hard to seperate the two.

 

Now, there was a time in the eraly 90s when the manufacturers were going from oil based paints to water based paints, where large problems were cropping up during the first few years, as the industry was still on a learning curve.

 

I had a 91 ford F150 that had tremendous egg-shell paint peeling problems, as well as acid raqin damage to where the car looked "wet" with etched droplet stains in the paint. At that time, I had repaints done at Ford's expense on the hood, and that was after the 3-year 36k mark, which was the warranty Ford was offering at the time.

 

Many manufacturers were doing paint out of warranty as the problems were very aggregious.

 

Many dealers put "protection packages" on vehicles whether the consumer wants them, or not. That is the case with my vehicle. The protection package came with a SEPERATE warranty that specifically covers paint staining and finish damage due to bird crap, acid rain, etc.. That warranty covers 5 years from the pruchase date, but is NOT attached to the new vehicle warranty.

 

Given that your truck is now close to 10 years old, I would have to believe that you are basically SOL wrt to any kind of warranty. I mean, it IS ten years old.... (?!!)

I kinda figured I was sol. That's why I didn't even think of trying to get it fixed when I bought the truck almost a year and a half ago when there was just a little dull spot on the hood. I'm only asking cause of what my buddie told me a few days ago.

In short, NO.

 

Reasons why:

 

GM warranty is 3/36

Corrosion Warranty: 6/100

 

GM would consider the request if the vehicle was under 10 years of age (From in service date), if you were the original owner, if a defect could be proven, if the vehicle was maintained at a dealership, if it is likely that you would purchase a new GM vehicle in the future. The only ones that I would ever consider covering under a "policy adjustment" would be the Cadillac line simply because that was the line in which GM had the most repeat customers (Not including customers that switched brands). GM was very rigid back in my day on repairs that were covered outside warranty.

It sounds like you may be experiencing clear coat failure. If that's the case, you could have the truck (or just the affected areas) sanded down and resprayed with clear. Since it's not a full paint job, the cost may not be too bad. If you're interested in getting it fixed, take it around to get some estimates.
