Tailgate Handle Lock, Installed But Can't Code The Lock

hi.. i have a 2008 GMC Sierra 1500. i didn't have the tailgat lock on it so i installed one today. I had read on another thread here that you just put your key in it and turn it to code it for your key. well i tried that and it didn't work... the key turned about a half a turn clockwise and stoped. now it seems that it is locked but the key won't turn back the other way to unlock...?? does anyone know if i'm screwed and going to have to have a locksmith or the dealer re-key the lock..??

Sounds like the latch rods are a bind. Did the latch open smoothly before you put your key in the lock? If it is in a bind you can remove the lock even with the key inserted and see if you can free it up.

 

I also installed a locking latch on my 08 Silverado. Lock seems to have a "hair trigger" and locks itself but hat is better than unlocking. I havn't taken the time to pull it apart and adjust

Wow, thats a bummer. When I did the install on mine it was as easy as turning the key and it was set. If you can't get it to work just see your supplier and ask them to replace it, you want it to be in top notch condition if its gonna keep your tailgate secure!

thanks for the help... i took it apart again and it looks like the locking mechanism was binding inside. it works now.

One other question.... has anyone tried using someone elses GM key to try and unlock your tailgate after doing this.... i was wonding if the tumblers inside the lock are still open or not.... i'll try with my buddies key tomorrow.. he has on 08' also...

Yea, I tried a couple of my buddy's keys. Two keys from 07s and one off an 08. They didn't even budge the lock, its pretty secure.
