Drivers Power Door Lock Not Power Any More

Recommended Posts

Hey all.. just looking for some input the drivers side door lock no longer functions as a power unit.. it works perfectly manually operated.. so is it just a simple actuator replacement and is that a difficult task? or should this be a visit to the dealer?

Thanks

I'll give you a "riveting" discussion on this!

If you know how to troubleshoot electrical things and are handy with mechanical things...

I would suggest going to a wrecking yard and finding a similar vehicle with the same type door panel. Then remove the wrecking yard door panel and see how it comes off. And see what all is inside.

Try removing the door lock actuator at the wrecking yard. See what you need to do to get it off.

On older vehicles, the door lock actuator is riveted on! So you need to use a cordless drill if you want to remove it at the wrecking yard. Drill out the rivets to get it loose.

Then on older vehicles, you need to remove the door lock actuator from where the outside door handle goes. So also have to remove that.

I don't know about the newer vehicles.

Anyway practice on the wrecking yard vehicle. Then see if you can do this or not.

Then with your vehicle at home and the door panel removed, check the wires to the actuator to be sure you are getting power to it when you activate the switch. (Confirm that this is the problem.) If not, trace the wires in the door, check the switch, or check the accordion tube where the wires enter the door. Use a multimeter.

So far as tracing wires goes, this is pretty easy because everything is right there.

Don't know on yours, mine were all on the same fuse.I assumed none worked,my error. If it's only the drivers door I'd take the door panel off and check for any loose or frayed wires..

My rear door started doing it on an 08 sierra, it was the solinoid and GM fixed it for free

A 2003 would be out of warranty. On the GMT900s the lock actuators going bad seems to be pretty common.
