2002 Gmc Sierra Spare Tire Question....

I bought a 2002 Gmc sierra and within a few months put 4 new tires on it.I noticed a key lock on my back "bumper" by the license plate that appears to unlock the spare tire.The truck came with 1 key.It turns on the ignition an activates the passenger air bag.It doesnt seem to unlock this spare tire.Is this key suppose to unlock it an if not do i have to go to a GMC dealer to get a key to unlock it? An am i correct in how this wheel is released by the key?.Thanks

Your ignition key is supose to unlock the tire lock.......at least it does on my '08 Sierra. I would try a dealership and see if they can help.

The key slot for your airbag disable function can be moved with any key or flat screw driver. As for your spare tire lock, are you putting the key in and turning, and pulling out on it?

i have turned the ignition key left an right,pushed in left an right,an turned pulling out,left an right.it The whole assembly moves slightly whether a key is in it or not but the key doesnt move anything.I was just curious if the 2002 model used the ignition key an if there was any trick to unlocking it.For some reason im doing soemthing wrong or its messed up.

I have an 02 sierra and the ignition key works for my spare tire......my only guess is that the lock is corroded inside not letting you turn the key. Theres really no tricks just turn and pull out.....maybe the dealer can help goodluck
