Rim Weight Left Overs

Recommended Posts

Anyone have any ideas as to how to clean off the gunk left behind from wheel weights? A couple of my rims have some crud left on it where the weight was and does not want to clean up. Ive tried never dull of it and it could not even put a dent in it, i know the spot will never be perfect but would like to clean the build up off if possible.

Are you sure it is dirt/crud and not your clear coat? If the weights have been on for a long time, it is possible that they wore through the clear coat?

I agree it could be you clear coat.....but if its not try a mild solvent! That will more than likely do the trick. You can also try Mother FX wheel cleaner(tougher than most other cleaners). Hope this helps

What type of rims? Chrome, aluminum, powder coated, painted, etc...

Sorry i didnt see this before, but they are the stock p25 17" alum rims that come on the 05 and up silvys. I took care of one of them with me having to buy a new rim as one of them cracked, but another one still has a good buildup on them. Im thinking it is just going to happen as i think it is through the clear coat on the rim. Tire place told me there is no way to balance the rim without putting weights on both sides.

Try some mineral spirits or the bug and tar remover for cars. If that still doesn't work, I'd give acetone a try. The clearcoat on the wheels should be powdercoat clear and will be unaffected by acetone.
