Electric Fans

So I'm chugging up a pretty severe 4WD road in 4LO. The coolant temp was up to 225 degrees, and the tranny temp was up to 218 degrees. The electric fan for the radiator never came on. When are they supposed too?

I think the fans start to spin up at around 160... then full speed around 180-190. If you have them, you could have the temps lowered if necessary by a custom tune. I think those temps are a little high. I've never seen mine over 210 on the gauge and never over 180 on the trans. :lol:

 

If your still in warranty, I'd take it in.

On older vehicles the fan should turn on when the *computer* coolant temperature sensor is above 225 deg. F. Or when the A/C is on and the high pressure side reaches a certain pressure.

 

For your vehicle, this information would be in a GM factory service manual for your year/model vehicle.

 

And probably you would just test the computer's coolant temperature sensor to be sure it was giving the correct reading for various temperatures. This tells the computer what temperature the engine is. Then the computer decides when to turn on the fan.

 

Also you would want to check fuses. This information would be in your owner's manual. Here is how to check fuses...

Then there is probably a relay for the fan and this would be computer controlled. A GM dealer could hook up an electronic tester and tell the computer to turn on the fan. Then you could see if the relay and fan were working when the computer told it to turn on. This would be the best test of the entire fan circuit.

John, are you sure they didn't come on? Did you get out and listen for them or pop the hood and seem them going? On mine I can hear the fans lightly before it even gets up to operating temp (sticks right at 210 on the needle and stays there once warm). Fans run constantly when it's idling and warmed up as far as I can tell.

I'm pretty sure. I stopped once on the way up, popped the hood and took a look. Neither one was running. On the other hand, 225 was where it stopped. There was no reason for it not to get hotter, other than the fans were running.

So you were pulling enough weight up a steep enough grade to need to be in 4-LO? Would not be surprised to see 225 water & tranny temps.

I've had mine get up to about 240-245ish while towing a 17ft. trailer up hill... after that it seams like the fans kicked on at odd temps... i've heard them kick on when temps hit about 230-235. i took it to the dealer and they thought maybe it was the thermostat so they replaced that but that didn't really seam to fix it. they said the fans are set to kick on at 230, and that they were working fine. it usually runs at 210, but it will go up to 225-230 quite often and then drop back down pretty quick. it seams fine when i first start driving but after about 15-20 mins of driving is when the temps start to fluxuate between 210-235ish. ohh yeah... this even happens while driving on flat freeways at about 65-70mph.

I think i'll try another dealer some time this week... i'll repost after i take it in... maybe we are having the same problem..

Also on my truck at least, there are two separate temperature sensors. One for the computer, and another for the instrument cluster temp gauge.

 

In the past on various vehicles, I have had these not read the correct temperature (then replaced it), so I would not be surprised if one sensor was reading a bit different from the other.

 

I don't know about your specific truck though. Might ask at the dealer if there are two sensors or one for both functions????

 

Anyone here know?

    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
