P0446 - 2001 Suburban 5.3l

Hello everyone.

We just bought this suburban in about February. In April, it started throwing the P0446 code, which isn't a huge surprise, given that it is driven on gravel daily.

I just now removed the filter in the evap valve (near rear of fuel tank), blew it clean, and reinstalled it.

I am assuming my evap. canister is dirty, but I couldn't seem to remove the hose connections. If I am correct, it is the rectangular plastic box near the front of the fuel tank. It has 3 hoses connected to it - 2 smaller lines, and the bigger line is about 5/8" diameter.

How does one remove the connectors on the Evap. canister? Is a special tool required?

Alternatively, I could reset the code, and assume I corrected the problem by cleaning the "filter".

Thoughts?

If no one knows, *sometimes* a GM factory service manual (for your year/model vehicle) would explain how to get something like this apart and would list any special service tools required by part number.

Other times the book might just say "remove hoses" and that is that!

Or it will say to drop fuel tank, do this, do that, THEN remove hoses.

But at least it would confirm the location of that part or what the part at that location is for.

Also these books would give detailed troubleshooting instructions for each diagnostic trouble code. So good to get a set of these books even if they are useless for this specific problem. (And you plan to keep the vehicle for awhile.)

The following web site has these tools by the "J" number in these books, here is an example tool...
