9-14mpg... uses about 1 quart in 3-5,000 miles depending on your motor. Some use a little more, some use a little less.

It's a real workhorse though :smoker:

Dito the power I have only had mine for a few months but it is truly impressive. I have a 2003 Silverado and get around 12-14 and like I said pretty new to the truck and only have put 2500 miles on it but the oil hasn't gone down any yet. Go for the 8.1 you will not be dissapointed.

9-10 in the city. 13.5 on the highway. Have gotten as high as 15mpg on the highway keeping it at about 65mph. Use about half a quart between oil changes. Pulls like a freight train. easy to maintain. Very reliable. get one and brag about it! Do searches on this forum. Tierodkill and Haulin8.1 are the resident experts. Also look at www.dieselplace.com They have a gasser forum.

I go through about 2 quarts between oil changes, and between 8 and 14.5 mpg depending on towing heavy loads or being empty.

Boy is my tail wagging, hitting me in both ears. When I bought my 02' I came to this website and signed in, asking most of the same questions and getting the same answers. At the time I was using about 1-2 quarts around 5K depending if I am pulling, and getting under 10mpg even on the HWY with no load. After a fresh tune up I have been getting 12.8 or so. Found out last week that I had a in cab air filter that need to be replaced.

What a great truck and motor, go for it..

I just bought my '03 K2500 8.1L Suburban about seven weeks ago, and I am happy with it so far. We have only driven it about 1,500 miles so far so I can't tell you much about the oil consumption. We're getting around 13.5 mpg highway (65-75 mph) and around town, driving it how I want to (not babying it, and not lead-footing it either) we are seeing around 9.5-10 mpg. I hitched up the travel trailer just to see how it felt, and it is a night and day difference between the 8.1L Sub and our 5.3L Yukon XL.

I had a 2001 CCLB, 2500. 8.1 is a great engine pulls great and never let me down. The gas mileage is a trade off, I was getting on the highway around 13mpg, pulling or in town it was between 8-10. I put 70,000 miles on it before I traded it in for a 1500 w/5.3, the 5.3 is great on gas but it sucks when trying to dog it. So if you have the chance to get an 8.1 you will love it, I still miss mine so I'll be envious.

Yeah i usually have both of them open on the screen. I also recommend Fullsizechevy when you get ready to modify. On dieselplace.com look for Manic Mechanic(haulin8.1) and Tierod.

Isn't this mileage thing an old thread? They're bad on gas but that is not what you by them for. To everyone who has an 8.1 powered truck or burb, I would be curious to know how many miles or kilometers you have on them. I have 204,000kms ( 127,000 miles) on mine and I still love all the good things about it, but once some of you get there you may not love it as much. Mine makes a bunch of cold start clicks and noises that mainly go away when warm, but some are still slightly there. It is not piston skirt . It is valvetrain. It's disappointing and I don't know how long I will put up with it before pulling it and going through the motor.

I heard alot about that cold start diesel or knock sound and everyonr that went to the dealer said it ended up being no big deal. And your right i did not buy a bigblock looking to get good mileage but 10-12 would be awesome compared to 8.

I have now idea on your cold start noises or problems. My 8.1 has 146,000 and purrs like a kitten. I get between 8 & 12.8 mpg, thats it. I was getting 8-10 until I changed the spark plugs and wires. The only thing that has come up now it as exhaust leak, it sounds like a crack exhaust manifold on the right side or a gasket went out. Will have to remove and inspect. Other than that I am very happy with my 8.1

110K miles on mine. Never noticed any cold start knocking since i've owned it about 30K miles ago.
