5.3l More Horsepower

Recommended Posts

Hello Gueys alright a friend of mine who has a 2003 silverado has the 5.3L and is basically turning it into a race truck now he has been told that engine can produce about 600 horsepower if he wants to spend the money.

So my question is what would you suggest all has to be done to that engine to produce that kind of horsepower and torque???

Thanks

Jared.

Stage One: exhaust, intake, tune

Stage Two: cam, headers, efans,

Stage Three: blower, transmission, gears

Check around, there are quite a few threads on here that can help ya out too.

Thank you for the quick reply i will start looking into doing these things what would your suggestions be for a supercharger that will provide a pretty good ammount of torque/horsepower.

I'm guessing she'll say Magnacharger. Sounds like you've got a nice project on your hands, keep us posted.

When you say "race truck" does he still want daily or weekend driver, drive-ability or does he want it radical enough to stand it just long enough to get to the track?

In my opinion keeping it N/A would be more badass, sometimes i feel like the bolt on supercharges are the easy way out, no offense jenna

I guess i just feel that way because i get tired of all the people my age buying stock GT mustangs and supercharging them, they dont realize 5 yrs down the road, pushing 10lbs of boost beating the hell out of it are gonna turn those stock internals into paper weights.

When you have a land yacht like a Tahoe, you have to put something like a blower on there to get it moving! I agree with the internals, however, your tuner should know what you have done to the engine and how to keep it safe. I am very happy with Magnacharger, both their product and customer service. They have a proven track record with these vehicles. I am not a fan of Whipples, mostly due to the fact that they don't have an intercooler, and I have seen many a blown up #7 cylider from their setup.

We have an 02 WS6 and it doesn't need a blower in the slightest, probably will never get one just because of the fact that the simple bolt ons got it to where we wanted it to be. Most of these F-bodies (and Mustangs) don't need blowers, but that is the nature of the engine and vehicle.

I agree that the only way for it to be relatively drivable and make 600H.P. would be a blower.

I just think its cooler to make 600 H.P. without one but then it would have a 3000+ stall and you would have to have a methanol injection or run 110.

but it all depends on what he means by race truck because stalls past 2000 make you want to commit suicide in a daily driver  then you really do once you get to the gas pump.

had an 79 silvy with this 383 in it and a 2800 stall wow it sucked for around town.

Now that depends on your definition of drivable. I consider my nova very drivable around town and it is N/A and makes right around 600 hp.

That being said, I built the motor with intent to add NOS. It is geared, cammed and has a converter that is all really built to spray. I could run a lot faster on the motor if I changed a few things but then it would take away some of the drive ability.

There are lot of ways to get to 600 hp. It really depends on what he wants to do and class rules and his budget. That many horsepower is not cheap, especially starting out with only 5.3L.

There are some great heads out there for LS style motors. Good heads, cam and intake can get you very close to your goal. But make sure he doesn't forget the other things that are just as if not more important when racing...transmission, rear-end, and traction. That kind of hp in a truck does not like to hook.

The thing I will leave you with is... No one is going to remember that, oh he has a blower, or he has NOS, they are just going to remember who got to the finish line first.

Actually, since a 6.0 virtually would drop in and 'plug n play' wouldn't it be better to start with a 6.0 or built up 6.0?

as they say there is no replacement for displacement, but the 5.3 is a pretty capable little engine. And i know alot of parts for the ls1 interchange so there is no lack of parts out there for em.

I will keep everyone posted on whats going on with the truck. This is only for the track not the street i told him about the 6.0L option however he wants to build it up from the 5.3L dont ask me why?

But i would think im going to need alot more that just a blower to get 600 horsepower by the way with 600 horse does anybody know how much torque you would be making 610 FT-LBS or so??

There was a guy on here a couple of months ago pushing those kinds of numbers with a turbo setup.

There's a guy here in SoCal with a turbo'd truck putting out way more than 600hp that Justin had me contact to help with a crank relearn when I installed my reprog'd PCM. Jenna may know him as well.

suck it up.. put a LS7 in it with ported heads, cam, fast intake yatta yatta.... put the bottle on it... stick a 4l80e in it thats built... put a ford 9 inch in it or put c clip eliminators on that rear end... do some safety upgrades and have fun. hope he has a big bank account.
