Garage Door & Gate Remote Programming

I've had homelink in all of my last few cars and it's a piece of cake to program. Apparently though my SD is not homelink but something else (has 3 green lights over the 3 buttons). I have read the manual but refuse to believe it's that difficult. My garage door is a little older and is not a rolling code. The manual says something about a line of switches and programming each position into the truck. Is this the only way?

 

Also, there are no instructions on specifically programming gate code remotes.

 

If anyone here has some info I would greatly appreciate it.
