The topic says it all. I'm looking for something to take to the range every once in a while and I'm trying not to spend too much. What do you have and what do you recommend?

Many choices depending upon if you will do more than target shoot. A Ruger 10/22 is a great value and cheap and fun to shoot. Endless mods available to custimize it any way you want. If you were looking for more power for larger game hunting and range shooting a military surplus Mauser 98 or Swiss K31 are affordable, accurate, but a tad more costly to shoot. A Remington bolt action 308 is also a good value if you wanted a modern sporting rifle. I am a milsurp junkie so my tendancies lean toward those. Target only, a 22 is plenty of fun.

Need more details about what you expect to use it for.

Strictly target shooting?

Target and hunting?

Just hunting?

What are you going to hunt?

What distances will you be shooting at?

What amount is considered...TOO MUCH?

Prices will range from less than $100 bucks for a decent 22, to several thousand for a really fine rifle. :D

I have a Ruger 10/22, an AR-15, and a Remington 12 Gauge, and I love the 10/22, it is a blast to shoot, and with the 10 round clip (I think, can't remember), you can do a little rapid fire to blow off some steam :D. and I hunt the occassional rabbit, and ground hog too

What a loaded question!

---hee hee i made a funny---

It really comes down to what you want to do vs what you want to spend. I had a $300 Walmart Remington 710 chambered in .300 WinMag that would hit quarters all day at 100yards. After I sold that rifle, I want to build a heavy barrel Remington 700 in .300 WSM and put some $500+ glass on top of it. Completely blacked out, black synthetic stock, black barrel, black optics. It will be my new black b****. Currently that position is occupied by my 870 bear shotgun. :D

If you want good bang for buck, take a look at an SKS. Ammo is still pretty cheap to find and they are one of the most reliable rifles in the world. They have their quirks, its good to know a little about firearms before sending ten thousand rounds downrange but they are extremely fun and still look bad a$$ even compared to modern day plastic guns. And they are a center fire rifle with a pretty respectable cartridge not a rim fire.

Dont get me wrong, plenty of people find out the hard way that 22 is lethal. there is just something satisfying about stacking a handful of centerfire rifle rounds in a rifle and hearing the action cycle when you squeeze the trigger. When you are shooting cans full of water, the 22 pokes holes, the SKS vaporizes the can.

Yeah what are you looking at if you are looking .22 a Marlin for under $200 would be nice if you want a high power rifle then I would say step up to the big names. I have a .17hmr CZ it is a bolt action and has a lot of heat to it. When I won it at a shoot I thought it was a .22 but wow it has a hot shot.

I haven't shot a .17 yet. Hearing your testimony gives me a new goal.

I'd have to agree with the 22 crowd. For simple range shooting and plunking, it's the most cost-effective. I've seen .22 ammo at most of the places I go and you can get it in bulk pretty easy. I've got a Remington 700 chambered in .270 that I love, but I got it for hunting. I'll take it to the range periodically, but it kicks a little bit, and I've been known to come home from the range with a bruised shoulder after a box of bullets. a 22 you can shoot all day long.

I would definatly get a 22 as my first rifle, any other rife you can shoot for only about 30 min. without going broke on ammo.

but a 22 you can just mess around all day and its plenty of fun

I would recomend an SKS as your next rifle though I just got one a couple weeks ago it was great most fun ive had with a rifle, just a cheap simple awesome rifle and the ammo is fairly cheap when you get steel casings.

10/22 or a 50 Cal Barrett.

Now that's quite a range there! :(

...but both fun in their own way!

If you're on a budget forget the Barrett, get a Serbu in .50.

(You're still going to pay around $3.00 per round for .50BMG, but you'll save some money on the rifle.) :seeya:

If your only going to get one rifle and use it strictly for the range I would recomend a .22mm. Go get yourself a decent 22 with a good scope. You'll have endless fun plinking what ever you can shoot. I've hit golf balls at 200 yards with a .22mm.

Another fun thing is trap shooting. Your range may have trap or skeet and a decent shotgun is always fun.

My arsenal includes:

Hand guns

S&W mod. 66 .357mag- Great for plinking with 38sp's and also carry it when I go hiking or camping

Kimber Ultra Carry II .45- This is my concealed carry piece

Browning Buckmaster .22- Great for plinking and for small game

Rifles

Marlin .22- 18shot, plinking and small game

Ruger .44 Mag- Good bush gun

Savage .270- Deer hunting ect...

Remington 870 ex. 12ga- W/rifled and shot barrel. Deer, bird, or trap shooting.

I just bought my father a Ruger Mini 14 for fathers day. Such a sweet gun! I didn't want to give it to him! haha. Love the 30 round .223!
