Crazy Idea

i always like to drive something different and i also hate having a computer telling me and my engine what to do. so......

the only time i prefer fuel injection is a cold morning letting it idle to warm up. other wise i have no problem with my caveman carbs.

not serious about this yet, but tell me what you think.

And i know my tranny wont work right with this but if this happens then a manual will too.

If your willing to just spend money for the heck of it and loose performance and fuel economy let alone drivability go for it.

do you really think i will loose performance and fuel economy with the right sized carb? I had a 383 with a 600 on it and i got near 15 on the highway doing 65

Fuel injection is a precise metering of fuel to each cylinder controlled by an ECM with many sensors on a carbed system the amount fuel is dependent on barometric pressure and the result is poor mixtures and distribution.

I hate to have to disagree Here is my 2 cents. There are many pros and cons to the idea First off performance wise and drivability will be fine. I can tell you right now Some of the older carbureted vehicles could blow todays fuel injection out of the water.

You honestly will see a drop in fuel economy from a carb remember what fuel injection was designed for to be more economic and advanced technology. The motor itself will probably breath better and dump more fuel so performance will increase. Its a neat project and i would like to see it done.

Its all up to you what you wanna do in the end you gotta do what you want to do. You will never beat the throttle response of a nice 4 barrell carb. But you wont enjoy trying to crank it on those cold winter mornings.

In all its a nice project keep us posted.

Alex,

Like you, I've come from a mostly carbureted engine background. While it may be more comfortable to you to work with a carbureted engine, I'd still recommend sticking with EFI. You can make it do all the things a carb can do and much more. If you're willing to learn a new skill, possibly taking some of the EFI tuning classes is for you. I haven't done it, mostly because of the lack of motivation and interest to invest the time. Besides, I have only one truck that I would use it on and it's my daily commuter and I just want it to drive nice.

Frankly, my opinion of the Holley carb is pretty low. It's a very crude carb with overly simplified circuits. They work good for WOT, but lack sophisticated transition circuits for a street/road car like the Quadrajet, Webers, Solex, etc..

Stick with the EFI.

ya i guess i should stick with EFI since a carb would already be a step back. I just thought it would be pretty cool to pop the hood and see a big chrome circle air cleaner, but then i couldnt participate in which CAI is the best threads :( .

well if some large part of my fuel injection system ever goes out i will definatly consider this, but i guess not now

It would be sweet to learn how to tune fuel injection, ill be going to PSU for college so hopefully i can learn a little more about it there.

There is a ton of things you can do With Fuel injection system PM me if you want to know a few I myself Grew up around carbs but with the change in time comes the change in technology.

I think the carb would be a nice project truck though :( However i agree dont get a holly carb There are not what they seem to be.

    • Which one, the AT or AS?   Starfire is made by Cooper/Goodyear but at $85/tire I'd think I'd need to level-set my expectations that they may not even be round 😉 But you're saying they're decent?   I'm already into this thing $1506 in parts, fluids, etc. Totaled all my receipts today. $250 of that was replacing an EGR and MAP sensor that were probably fine, but I'm not going to return the parts since they've been installed. I'm cheap, but not that cheap. I use it, I keep it!   I may or may not make money if I sell the truck at this point, but, that wasn't really the point. And if I billed my time, I'd be hosed for real. My thought on the tires is I "might" put 1,000 miles on before selling it. I just don't want to put absolute junk on it, that doesn't do anyone any good. If the Solus solidly isn't junk, I'll definitely consider them.
    • I leave mine as is. I'm always a trip away from riding on unpaved roads. Dealer can clean it when they prep it after I trade it in for another new truck.
    • I have these on two vehicles and love them. Pepper is one of them 😉
    • 4WD. Far as I know it came stock with P's and not LT's. Definitely planning to put P's on it, but stock is a 109 XL load rating so I should probably stick within that guideline.   No rebates on anything I can see at the moment. Discount Tire is offering $50 off, but Pep Boys is very competitive on price, and also carries all the off-brand stuff. Les Schwab always wants an arm/leg, but they do good work.   It still has the original spare. Goodyear Wrangler RT/S, thing looks like a tractor tire LOL!! How times have changed.
    • 2020 Sierra 2500 HD (base model) gas engine 4wd.    All 4 windows roll down on their own. Happens somewhat randomly after stop and engine off - when engine turned off, when walking away from vehicle before or after locks activated. Pulled the window fuse F14 Instrument Panel Fuse Block Right; the driver's side still activates from driver's side door panel; passenger and back seat windows activate from local switches on their doors but not from driver's side group of switches. Power mirrors don't activate with fuse removed either (same fuse for both circuits). Problem not solved.    How can they even activate with fuse removed but they are all still opening and can control from each door?  When they open on their own, I can shut them from the switch in each door, but they don't stay closed.    Seems to be activated somehow with key fob; something bumping the key fob in my pocket or just handling - removed key fob and took it far enough away and now the windows stay closed. Replaced key fob batty just in case, no change.    Sounds like some kind of wiring short or maybe electronics. Dealer will first replace electronic control module without checking anything else and I anticipate problem will still exist since their troubleshooting skills are limited to "do whatever the computer says".  In any case, keyfob seems to be activating the circuitry.    Surely I'm not the only one with this issue, but I can't find anything related on the site. What do yall think?   JohnRoy
