what's the deal with the cabin air filter? i just bought a 2002 2500hd silverado, and ran it through jiffy lube and the grease monkey there told me i needed a new cabin air filter. i dont remember how much he was going to charge me, but i didnt do it b/c i thought it seemed outrageous and kinda frivolous.

should i be worry about it? can i change it myself? and where the heck is it? i've popped the hood a few times to look for it and have no idea what i'm looking for.

change it yourself if your truck has some mileage on it or is driven in a dusty climate, no to hard to get to is under the passenger side of the dash and is a two piece filter, you should be able to make out the access door after you remove the lower trim

Do change it! You will be amazed at all the crap thats in there, leaves, bugs, hair ect......my 01 was clogged and I could not believe how bad till I saw it!...Also vacuum out as much as you can from the box itself and spray some deoderizer in there while everything is open.

I couldn't believe what was it there-twigs,leafs,bugs,dirt- I never changed them in 7 years and after 125,000+ the pleats were almost completely full. After the change what a difference!!! Not hard to change at all either. I tries the stealer first and ended up getting them from napa- saved a bunch of money

Ok, I missed the clue train. What exactly does this filter do? I checked mine and it looks opaque. I'm no rocket scientist, but I'm guessing I need a new one.

How badly did Jiffy Lube rip up your interior heater/blower cover?

If you are changing the filters yourself, and you frequent these lubby places, make sure to tell them to leave the cabin alone. Same as they never read the Stop label for your K&N filters and still ask you if you want to replace it.

My only reason for me to ever use these places is to avoid the EPA nazi's in the neighborhood. One drop of oil on the concrete and they report it as you have drums of oil in backyard. And believe me, they way these nazi's report it, the EPA comes in full force with search warrants. They only found my drain pan in the garage with just residue it, as I took it to the local parts store to drain. But they dug up half of my backyard for "samples". Cost me $1000 and a week to put my backyard landscaping back to order. And I was denied reimbursement for the damages by the EPA, "even though you did not have a significant amount of oil in a non-approved container and will not be fined, you nontheless did have some residue found in a container not approved for long term storage of such materials on the property which did ultimately made the warrant just.". I couldn't officially get the complaintants name from the EPA for evidence in small claims to go after the weasel nazi that I know reported it.

It traps and holds dust, pollen, and any larger contaminent in the air air that will be cooled, warmed, or just blown in by the HVAC system. With a clog the system can't work worth a darn. The airflow is restricted and the system takes longer to reach set temperatures. It costs gas on A/C. The A/C will accumulate condensation on A/C in humid climates makeing the situation worse still and causing mildew and odors.

I remember as a kid any oil, gas, coolant, transmission fluid, etc. from motorcycles, gocarts, cars, mowers........would get dumped next to the fence in the backyard !

So there are no cabin replacable cabin filters in the 03 and up trucks? What did they change to get around it or am I just stuck with a less performing a/c due to dirt?

Posted

GM droped them after '02. The HVAC case and evaporator core are different and there is not a recess for the filters to install into even though GM parts lists them for '03. Keep in mind that all the truck a/c from way back until '99 didn't have them and nobody complained. Also from '03 up. I figure that due to lack of regular filter changes the filters caused more complaints than improved sales so they were quitely dropped. A good idea but most people don't read owners manuals or follow maintainence schedules like they should. They just know the A/C doesn't work and hold GM accoutable for thier ignorance. Most of the luxery cars still have them.

Without filters the evaporators have be larger but with wider air gaps to pass dirt instead of catching it. There's always the foam cleaner you can shoot up the drain to clean and deoderize it.

    • I find it amusing the OP doesn’t realize this threads heading includes several engines. He should have posted in the off topic section if he wanted a more narrow focus. I really appreciate and find amusing that he actually pointed out one of my many vehicles. The Odyssey. That happens to use 0-20 oil. I love pushing his buttons.
    • Maybe, but it seems he is the only one that has backed up data to prove what he is stating. I think he is doing this more because he enjoys it and wants to get the information out to us. He's got the knowledge and access to the proper equipment and having the funds doesn't hurt.  I would love to do what he is doing and would do it if and when I hit the Powerball.  I'm not a Tribologist by any means but love to learn what I can.   I would bet there would be doubting people out there if a completely independent lab with high quality work and highly respected in the automotive industry, put out information like this.  The world can't be pleased, one just has to take the information that they are given, do more of their own research to find actual lab data to back up what they are trying to figure/find out.  Most don't bother, they just want to believe what they first see.     I don't have the minimax but my 6.2 in my 2019 Silverado with 64k miles shows excellent UOA results with 0w-20 and for my own purposes 5w-20.  Since not much of a change using 5w. I liked the data sheet information on the SS 5w-20 and figured I would give it a try.  Still the same viscosity at 100℃.   In the end we all just do what makes us happy, life is too short to get upset over trivial social media.   On a side note, I do feel GM has dropped the ball and just cares about the bottom dollar and not quality anymore.  "Like a Rock" has been long gone.  Seems "Built Ford Tough" has as well.
    • Better than stock but that's like putting lipstick on a pig
    • Hello, my 3 month old Sierra Elevation wont recognize a trailer with electric brakes? All the lights work correctly, but no power to the brakes?   This is the factory installed brake controller. If you manually push the knob, the display shows the power % but does not light up like my 2022 silverado.   I have an appointment with the dealer, but was checking to see if anyone else has seen this issue.    Thanks,
    • Been using SS 0w-20 from new, but wanted to change to the 5w-20 because I liked the data on the data sheet, to me it seems like a little better product. But as you can see, not much difference. This is also with running a mix of 10 gallons E85 to a tank topped with 93. It isn't a flex fuel vehicle so any higher I get a CEL for running lean on both banks. Yes my mileage takes a hit. Instead of 20 mpg I normally get on trips I get 17mpg. This is also using EaO17 filter.  What is amazing is I have the AMSOIL cone filter on it since I have the GM Performance intake installed and that air filter has 44k miles on it.  I just take it out and shop vac it off once a year.  I use the upholstery tool on my shop vac.  Works well.
