  1. Nothing wrong with isolating the second battery. My approach will be to add the second battery when my '18 gets a little weak. I will put two new AGMs in there. i will probably use #2 AWG wire to parallel them. It is very important to keep a low impedance between the batteries to avoid long term charging issues.. I won't use isolation.. if i have enough amp hours in the batteries, i will be okay. Two new batteries in parallel will last quite a while. The toughest duty they perform is cranking the engine.. you have two of them in there.. that amperage and impact on the battery is halved. A battery has only so many starts in it...
  2. i went from gas with turbos to the 5.3 as we do vacations in the high altitudes in northern new mexico. i miss the turbos. but that is more than offset by trouble free driving of the pushrod V8.
  3. great pick! i had a ford that was nothing but troubles (ecopoop) and i did angst over getting rid of it... until one Ford shop visit ended up with a new Sierra. Sometimes you can't wait.
  4. boy i am glad my '18 has a simple key.
  5. i'll probably do it. i am hitting alaska in a couple years..
  6. hammering pretty loud. sounds like it has a lot of rough miles on it...its too late to do anything about it now.
  7. i think that lifts and big tires were started by lunk heads like me... who grew up in the 70/80s with 55 mph and a country much more tolerant of 4wheeling.. you are way ahead handling and stopping staying stock... wear and and resale too.. air down the tires a bit and you will do fine at the beach..
  8. I have two freebies with my GMC... i think it makes sense to have it in the dealer a coule of times to show you maintain it... i always clean mine under the hood before i let them replace the oil and filter.. the worst thing they can do it get dirt in the fill..
  9. Back in the day... the old GMs.. ran A-6 compressors. they ran at high rpm, never overheated.. and when revved they were like 3 ton units.. cast iron and 6 pistons... fast forwarding... when i pass a vehicle.. i disengage my AC not to over-rev it or let it at high rpm for extended periods... once they let go... it is hard to get them back in shape without starting over with everything.. my experience...
  10. Mine rarely pushes 190. What altitude and how much weight?
  11. Sounds like a bad deal to me. On my $55k '18 SLT i paid $41k.I could only choose white or red tint... you have to keep them until the powertrain warranty is used up... unless you are Gates or Buffet...
  12. Came from a '17 F150... back to GM. My last GM was a 2005 Yukon. I drive my dad's RAMS all the time. He has had a '13, a '15 and an '18. They are all solid - more so than my oil leaker Ford... RAM and GM have both avoided turbos. GM's 5.3 is small V8, and the only one i have experience with... seems better to me than the RAM ECO, or 5.7 or 3.6 all of which i have driven in my dad's machines The RAM 8sp is great. What you have to watch for on RAMs is the depreciation... they really sink like a rock... PS the'13 RAM did lose the 8sp at 30k. First a whine.. then a howl... it went quickly
  13. Frames are thinner and thinner each year. The integrity of the frame is key to safety.. while i can't vouch for the posted picture being dangerous, i would say ten years of Mass long winters might be plenty for a corroded thin lightweight frame... be careful. Get it inspected with a shop who can put it on a lift and look for cracks. That will tell you a lot of what you need to do...
  14. My 5.3 will do some pretty amazing feats... and that is V8 mode only... 27 mpg for 50 miles...
  15. i had an F150 ruby red... and now have an '18 slt. i had a lot more touch up spots on the ford than the gmc... i also have an E350 in the garage that has 70k miles and only a couple of marks - not chips up high... gmc probably better than ford in my experience but not close to the e350...
  16. Products The Silao plant currently produces the following vehicles and Propulsion Systems: Vehicles: Chevrolet Silverado and Cheyenne (Silverado in LTZ and High Country trim levels for Mexico) GMC Sierra Propulsion Systems Assembly V-8 engines, including: 4.8L 5.3L 6.0L 6.2L 6.2L supercharged Transmissions for rear-wheel drive vehicles, including: 6-speed 6L45 and 6L80 8-speed 8L45 and 8L90
  17. Is this a USA or Mexico engine?
  18. 2018 SLT built in Jan 2019.. i was concerned about getting the last one off the line... but those concerns are not warranted, yet. 10k on it now and flawless. i had a 2005 Yukon before... this just is fantastic.. no oil burning and idles like a sewing machine.. My '05 had piston slap at 40k... hope this one doesn't have that problem. Did change the rear lube. Pitiful thin. Been teleworking (teleslacking) the last 6 weeks... haven't put a hundred miles on it this period....
  19. My financial advice is to trade down to a cheaper truck and cut your debt. a six year old truck should be paid off... you will need financial flexibility if you keep it, to fix it. Vehicles are such a lousy use of capital. If you use it for work - and can expense it, that is one thing. but, please be careful with trading these $50k trucks, the taxes, the insurance and upkeep will ruin you, unless you really have the scratch to do it...
  20. I think once we get through this corona crisis in a year or so, probably after November... we will get some new taxes. Gasoline is cheap - $1.19 a gallon in Oklahoma, It won't be that way in a a couple of years. Electric will replace our combustion engines pretty quickly. Some kind of hybrid arrangement for the transition. I expect my 2018 Sierra will be my last 5.3 powered truck. 2030 will be the cutover.
  21. 2018 SLT 4x4 Z71 built in 2019... So far solid. great mpg for a small V8 and happy with interior and Bose system. Coming from F150, which if you get a good one is better.. but if you have a turbo with issues like i had.. watch out! 30 days a year in the shop. Notice on the driveway... oil leaks from Ford are pressured washed...
  22. My recommendation is to "table" the idea of riding a small enduro or other bike on city or highway streets. I just sold my 650 Honda.. The roads just are not safe for little machines anymore. Texting, talking, and other distracted drivers, uninsured are at record highs.. it is just too much risk. My 2 cents.
  23. A 2018 SLT made in 2019.... So far a good machine...
